budget build advice

Thread Starter
budget: 600-700
something that can easily run current game. dont need monitor and peripherals, just the case and the goodies inside.

main thing i cant decide on is the mobo.

im thinkin 500-600watt psu
4870/gtx 260
4 gigs of ram, i think i know what i want
intel mobo? single pci-express/onboard hd audio/ good overclocker
intel cpu that i can overclock(e84/q95/q94?)
500gighd

these would be the preferred specs but doesnt have too.

p.s. this is for a friend but im building.

Comes out to like $790 after shipping and MIR.

You can drop that price to $700 if you get 800MHz memory or a Q6600 instead of the Q9550.

SaltTheWalt's list looks good. If pick the Q9550, I would go for UD3P.

just wandering you do have the o/s's right? i dont see them listed on any price lists. The build you have above i believe will do what you want and more...(ie. a little overclocking)

yeah he has two copies (cd keys) of xp that he will use and eventually upgrade to vista.

hes not doing anything that necessarily requires a quad core so i think the e8400 will be ok. (he mainly plays wow, but just bought cod4)

Your last build looks really good to me. I've ordered pretty much the same build but I would be really careful about that psu. Here's a similar build:

case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119068

drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148261

video: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102810

psu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139005

ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122

mb + cpu combo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.181190

Comes to 690.51 shipped - 50 MIR.

P.S. I noticed you mentioned overclocking, if thats the case your going to want to buy an aftermarket cooler...

no aftermarket cooler for a few reasons....

1. its not my computer
2. this computer underclocked is still better anything this kid has seen.
3. the Tt case looks like it has a lot of airflow
4. ill use as5 on stock cooler and only do a minor o.c.

the only question i have about the psu is why is 1 rail x 52 amps better than
4 rails x 18 amps.

That budget is really tight...here's what I would go with if building for a friend.

To answer your PSU question, 1 Rail is better as it provides a single solid 52A of voltage. Your 4 rail x18A is not actually 72A, you can look on the PSU to see what the combined 12V voltage is.
