Well, this is it guys ... my first post and my first attempt at building my own system. Just to give a heads-up before I lay down the specs, this system will serve a dual purpose as a gaming system and workstation, so to speak.

I am sticking with air cooling for now, with the possibility of going to liquid cooling in the future. But, with those limitations, what do you think my overclocking possibilities will be? Am I missing anything?

I’m looking to learn, so please don’t hold anything back.

Wow, quite the setup for a first build...

With an air cooler like that, there is really no reason to go liquid unless you really just like the hobby. I'd say that HSF is on par with most Liquid kits.

Also, if you haven't bought the 295s yet, 3xGTX285 always outperforms 2xGTX295. Just a heads up.

Welcome to OCN

Nice build, but Quad 295 SLI? What resolution will you be gaming at?

That is what I initially wanted to go for. But, after some research, I was told that my setup would not fit in my Antec Twelve Hundred running the GTX 285’s in three-way SLI. Was I misinformed?

Also, I am running a Dell 30in XHD at the moment. The GPUs are mainly for brute rendering power until I can afford a couple ‘nice’ workstation cards.

Yes, you were misinformed. You can most definitely fit three of those in a 1200. They will be very close together and will run pretty hot, but the 1200 has amazing airflow so it shouldn't be worse than quad 295s.

Unless you do serious CAD type work, you don't need the 'workstation' cards. (Quadro and the like)

If 2x GTX295's are temporary solutions until you can afford nice workstation cards... what the hell are you buying?

Quadro Plex 2100 ... Just don't tell my wife.

EDIT

This will be my main system connected to a render farm of about 20 Dell OptiPlex GX260's.

Since you say you have a chance of going watercooling in the future i would get another case so you dont have to buy another on later on or have to try and make a w/c setup work with that case. its not bad buts its not very w/c friendly

Got any good suggestions?

Such equipment deserves an equally awesome case after all, doesn't it?
How about a Cosmos S, or even better Lian Li PC-P80 Armorsuit (I'm not sure if this one has plenty of space for radiators)?
