FINAL CHECK after OC E8400 + Asus P5Q Pro Turbo

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Thanking to all that advice me on what to get & this is what I came up within my budget. It really turned out to be a great PC. Below are my build:

E8400
Asus P5Q Pro Turbo
Mushkin DDR2 1066 2x 2GB
ThermalRight Ultra 120 eXtream + 120mm fan
Palit GeForce 9800 GT
Silverstone 560w True Power
WD 360GB 16mb SATA 2
CoolerMaster CM690

With the advice & help of some I've manage to overclocked to the list as below & passed test.

CPU: E8400 = 4.05GHz / 1.368 Vcore / FSB 450
RAM: DDR2 1128/ 1125.2 MHz / 2.1v / 5-5-5-15 / 4:5
GPU: Core 721MHz / Memory 951MHz / Memory 1836MHz / 13867 3DMarks

IS THIS GOOD ALREADY OR CAN GET BETTER? Plan to use it about 16hrs everyday. Pls advice.

THANKS again to all that helped.

Enjoy your new system and the achievements you have made. Although if you like to tinker, the fine tuning can last for ages...

Wow, I think you already have a pretty good overclock. But I do want to cover the following:

First, I want to make sure that the following so-called "limiting" features in the BIOS are disabled. They're not overclocker friendly, and they have the potential to cause instability:
  • Spread Spectrum
  • Intel Speedstep, or "Enhanced Intel Speedstep", or "EIST".
  • C1E Enhanced Halt State, or "C1 Enhanced", or "Enhanced C1", or anything with "C1E" or "C1" in the name.
Based on the screenshots, it looks like Intel Speedstep may already be disabled, which is the main one to get out of the way. However, the other two should be disabled too.

Also, I actually believe that 1.368V is possibly more voltage than is necessary for 4.05 GHz. But of course, time will tell. However, I'd like to see what happens with the voltage a little lower, so change it to maybe 1.312V, 1.320V, 1.328V, etc. Not only that, but the VID Voltage Range for our CPUs is 0.85V - 1.3625V. For every day use, it's commonly recommended to keep the voltage below 1.362V (1.3625V).

As you can see, I have 4.0 GHz, and I only need 1.312V. However, the memory plays a role too, but I think I have to let somebody else who has a deeper understanding explain it.

But for example, I like to use Orthos and LinX. Orthos uses the very same tests that Prime95 has, but it doesn't have all of those features that are of no use to overclockers. Plus, it has a better GUI, and it's also easier to tell when the test has failed. And LinX uses the very same "Linpack" test that Intel Burn Test uses, but it has a much better GUI so it's easier to use and determine instability.

Now, I had my CPU stable at 4.0 GHz with 1.328V, and my memory was at 2.150V (it's rated 2.0 - 2.1V) at stock with the exceptions of the CAS latency and the Command Rate: 5-4-4-12-1T. Stock timings are 4-4-4-12-2T. Anyway, as I was saying, this overclock was rock solid stable over 12 hours with the Small FFTs test, over 6 hours with the Blend test (which is for memory testing), nearly 7 passes in Memtest (I stopped it before the 7th so I could use my computer), and it had passed 36 full passes in LinX, and locked up during the 37th test (it's a very good thing that it got that far).

So, to summarize, this overclock was rock solid stable:
  • FSB 444.5 MHz x 9
  • Core voltage: 1.328V
  • Memory clock: 800 MHz
  • Memory timings: 5-4-4-12-1T
  • VDIMM: 2.150V
But then I learned that I could maintain stability (or even get it to pass more runs in LinX) by reducing the core voltage and increasing the VDIMM. So, to get started at least somewhere, I reduced the core voltage to 1.312V, and I increased the VDIMM to 2.175V. Then I ran LinX again and this time it passed 37 full passes and locked up during the 38th run. But to put this in perspective concerning how the memory plays a role in the overclock, I tried running LinX with 1.312V before using the 2.150V VDIMM, but it barely made it over 5 runs.

So, in essence, simply increasing the VDIMM from 2.150 to 2.175V made a world of difference. I guess that's how memory plays a role in the overclock. Either that, or this is due to the nature of the linpack test. I don't truly know for certain.

Finally, concerning the GPU overclock, I think that I'm not very good at overclocking GPUs, so I'll leave that to the experts.

But now I have some questions: when you say that your overclock passed the test, which tests did you perform? For how long did you perform the test(s)?

What were the load temps according to Core Temp or Real Temp?

Also, is 1.368V the voltage under full load? If not, then what is that voltage?

I think that might be everything that should be covered at this point. I am looking forward to your reply.

wow... thanks for the help. That's what I'll call a reply.

Looks like there are more than the test that I've known & did. Gonna download the BABE IN LEATHER & start whipping the PC. Sees if it passes...

Keep U updated of the results.

Thanks.
