It's getting to the point where I'm considering running to my local MicroCenter and seeing if they have D0's in stock and eBay'ing my C0 if they do.

I dont have a microcenter. I have a fry's but i cant buy from there. The people that work there dont even like their jobs, and wouldnt know an i7 from an PhenomII if the boxes were labeled and dropped on their foot. Asking for a d0 stepping i7 might make their head explode. Even their website shows the i7 under the 775 pin option.

Haha, it's probably pretty safe to say the same thing about MicroCenter employees.

I'm sure most people work at those kinds of stores just to try and get something on the resume so they can move up to a better place.

I tried calling earlier this month to find a D0 but the lady that was on the phone said they were all the C0's. I might have to swing by there in person and ask to look at the labels. It's only about 10 minutes away from me.

Ok....I think I nailed it!

I have one minor issue....heat!

At full load I am hit 89 to 92c...and that is a little too much for my comfort zone. Wondering if this is normal...or if my heatsink is not seated right...or maybe I should "lap" them. Would love some advice on this heat for sure.

I want to run OCCT for the 2 hours so that I can log my results...but until I can knock the temp down like 10c I just dont feel comfortable running it that high for 2 hours. Did it for 30 mins...and that was enough.

This is what I ended up with....

Cpu Clock Ratio - 21x
Base Clock(BCLK) Control - 191

Intel Turbo Boost - Enabled
Cpu Cores Enabled - All
CPU Multi-Threading - Enabled
CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) - Disabled
C3/C6/C7 State Support - Disabled
CPU Thermal Monitor - Disabled
CPU EIST Function - Disabled
Virtualization Technology - Disabled
Bi-Directional Prochot - Disabled

QPI Link Speed - Auto
Uncore Frequency - Auto
Isochronous Support - Enabled

Performance Enhance - Turbo
System Memory Multiplier - 6.0
DRAM Timing Selectable - Auto

LLC - Enabled
Cpu Vcore - 1.5 (gonna see if I can go a little lower...might help with temp)
Qpi/vtt - auto
Cpu Pll - auto

Qpi Pll - 1.4
IOH core - 1.4
ICH I/O - 1.66
ICH Core - 1.26

DRAM Voltage - 1.66

Those voltages are too high, and probably the reason for high temps. VTT at auto in gigabyte mobos will almost always result in something in access of 1.4, which is beyond the safe '1.355' limit. vcore is safe till 1.55, so you are ok there.

what's the ambient temp?

why do you need these so high?

ambient temp is about 75f

I am really having a hard time with the QPI/VTT....I tried googling it for "safe voltage" and I see that some people are saying that 1.35 is the max safe you should have...but no one shows any proof of that.

Its kinda nutty that I tried the Gigabyte auto Tuner...to make the 920 run at the 965 (3.2) and in Easytune 6 it shows my QPI/VTT at 1.4, I know that this doesnt mean its safe...but I dont think it necessarly says "it's the devil" to run it higher then 1.35.

I thought I remember hearing something from multiple places that it didnt really matter at what voltage you ran QPI/VTT...just as long as it didnt exceed .5 differential of the CPU Vcore....can someone please verify this for me?

0.5V differential thing applies to difference between QPI/VTT and DRAM voltage. That is for running higher voltage high performance RAM modules which need like 1.8V. In that case, you better run 1.3V QPI/VTT or more to make sure you don't burn the CPU.

About the gigabyte BIOS: its nutty. vtt auto gets 1.42 if I try to go anywhere near 3.8Ghz. It makes the LED orange to show slight overvoltage, whereas it warns in the BIOS if you set anything above 1.34. So, nobody including GB knows what's safe for VTT. Its a brand new architecture!

So what your saying is that 1.4 might not be so bad after all?

I dont know...maybe I will just stick with 3.8Ghz with QPI/VTT at 1.4 and just call it good. Its not like I need 4 anyway...I just really wanted to achieve that....maybe after we get some more clarification on what QPI/VTT acceptable voltage is...I can try again.

What you can do to achieve 4G is to disable HT and enable Intel Turbo Boost (and not the performance enhance thing, keep that "standard"). It will run 10C cooler. Unless you have some multithreaded apps which need that extra 15% juice from HT, I think its better to run with HT off because you can push vcore as high as its max of 1.55 with a decent cooler like TRUE or Noctua. I am getting temps in mid-70s with Mugen2 at 3.99 (190x21) with HT off. With HT ON, I can max do 3.686 before temps go into mid to upper 80s. My ambient is about 25C.

So, its a choice between higher single thread clock, less heat vs. more threads, more heat but lower clock. I am leaning towards HT OFF. But I have saved a couple of good profiles if I need HT ON.

Kinda weird, but have any of you guys had trouble with your system starting up with HT off?

I tried turning HT off and running the same settings but then the system wants to just keep turning on/off without POSTing at all. I tried a bunch of changes and nothing seemed to work and as soon as I re-enabled HT, it fired right up fine...
