The Phenom has two memory controllers on the CPU. Ganged is setting both memory controllers to work together which allows data (that is being used by all cores) to await on the queue until they are accessed. Unganging means that the two controllers work independently. This allows them to work asynchronously with reference to individual clocks with their one or two Dimms. For some reason I overclock a bit better in ganged than unganged.

I also read that ganged allows memory access to all cores and unganged does not.

I would set your Quad Core to unganged.
Its a dual, but +rep for the info.

And its default @ unganged. But I was wondering.

Ganged = 1x128 bit bandwidth
unganged = 2x64 bit bandwidth

Multiple core applications unganged is better
One Core applications ganged is better

Unganged or ganged you are still in duel channel though.

I have a phenom 965 quad... cpu-Z reports that the memory controller is ganged, however, I think that this is necessary because of using ddr3 1600 ram. since the memory controller only supports ddr3 1333. In ganged mode it has the extra bandwidth to keep up?

no..you want "unganged" mode..Put the RAM in slots 1+3 or 2+4
"ganged" =32-bit mode "unganged"=64-bit mode

Switching to Ganged mode is supposed to help benchmarks, not by much though, could see an extra 10 or more points on 3DMark 11

I also use the 965 BE, and have 16GB corsair vengeance (4*4GB). CPU-z reports that my memory is in unganged mode, so this is possible.
