This RAM:

The 4770 is a good card to use if you want to go that route.

I think going completely AM3 is a good plan because I have experience with buying a DDR(1) board and having to shell out double DDR2 prices for RAM when I needed to upgrade.

I'm thinking of buying a 4890 more now. Seems like it's worth it since I'm starting from nothing. I can get $30 off this XMS3 Corsair Dominator ram with a combo deal on the 4890. Should I go with that instead?

would this motherboard support it though? its 1600 ram, it says it supports 1666 overclocked. i still dont really get what it means if it only supports a certain speed overclocked.

also can somebody link me to a good disc drive. i can't really tell which is the best.

those are the ones that are $150 for a 4gb kit right? if so those are a little out of my price range for what i want to spend on ram.

what's the deal with pci-e 3.0?

now i'm wondering if i'm gonna need to upgrade even an AM3 board to get a pci-e 3.0 slot for a new card.

if that poses a problem i might just go back to ddr2 and save some money at the moment.

what is the cheapest/reliable/cost-effective/bang per buck AM3 compatible DDR 2 board?

overclocking actually might not even be a problem, if i got 4770 the only game i will be playing before i upgrade some time next year the most demanding game i'd be playing is left 4 dead.

X3 720
Corsair 650TX
4890
GSkill or OCZ

** I havent had a single problem with Asus boards, Im curious why people are saying that. Ive owned 3 in the last 4 years and was only extremely satisfied with them. Of course they were all AMD platforms, I cant speak for Intel platforms**

Nor have I seen much in the way of Asus' fault in manufacturing.

I had great experience with Vista x86 and x64 but Now that ive gone to Win7 the last 4 months, Ill never go back. I love the Beta Win7. No bloat, and lots of extras that I dont use. My system runs infinitely faster overall just by going to Win7.

Id say if you can find a free copy of Win7 go that route and wait till a full DVD Retail/OEM copy comes out to buy later down the road. I wouldnt buy Vista now.

Final build

CPU: 720 X3

GPU: XFX 4890

-Best price out of the big name card manufacturers. There is a Gigabyte version for $15 cheaper after rebates, but I don't know if I should go with that or not.

Board: Biostar 790 GX
-With the rebate and bundle discount this board comes to $60. I was set on the Gigabyte 790 X, but that would be $80 more. Do you think it's the right decision to go with the Biostar?

RAM: 4GB of OCZ Reaper DDR2 800http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227267
-$38 after rebates. Is there anything around the $50 range that I should consider instead.

CPU Cooler: Xigamatek Dark Knight
-I'm buying some MX-2. I'll need thermal compound, right? Would you recommend a different compound? Or even a different CPU cooler?

Optical Drive- The $25 LG 22X, I keep hearing that's the best.

PSU- Corsair 650 TX

-I'd like to keep this when I upgrade to next-gen cpu and gpu, think it will be sufficient? On the other hand I don't want a bunch more power than I need if it will waste energy).

Harddrive: WD Black 650 GB, 32 MB Cache, 7200 RPM

Case: CM 590
-I keep hearing it's better than the CM 690 and the Antec Three Hundred.

Monitor: TBD (any suggestions would be fine. i liked this one asus, but i was worried it was 1080 and not 1200 heightwise. something 19-22)
Do I need anything else? Cables or anything, for my OS I plan on using the Windows 7 client.
