This is like looking into a time machine for me, hah I missed about...7 years worth? Glad to be back on OCN it's been a long time. Time to relieve my trusty Opteron and GTX 260 of duty, putting a new machine together now. It's amazing, I used to be so current on the latest and greatest now I feel like a lost puppy!

This concerns R9 390 VS RX 480

It's hard to find stock RX 480 reviews vs R9 390 or R9 390X, as most reviewers focus on overclocked video cards from AMD partners, but let me try to make a point here.

Pcgamer based on 15 games average result has R9 390 about 5 FPS faster than RX 480 8 GB in it's performance summary.

Techpowerup states that RX 480 8 GB is faster in lower resolution benches, but R9 390 wins in higher resolution benches. This means that R9 390 is faster, since it's true potential of higher memory bandwidth is unleashed on higher resolutions.

Extreme tech show R9 390 to be faster than RX 480 8 GB in every game, except one tie.

Eurogamer shows R9 390 winning in 5 games out of 8 and RX480 winning in 2 games out of 8 with one tie.

So, R9 390X 8 GB > R9 390 8 GB > RX 480 8 GB > RX 480 4 GB.

You have based your RX 480 superiority upon RX 480 OC benchmarked vs stock R9 390, which gives a false impression when in reality stock R9 390 8 GB is undoubtedly faster than stock RX 480 8 GB.

they're actually GTX 1080 OC aren't they?

I've updated my previous post just to cementify the R9 390 slight superiority over RX 480 8 GB - i have included a link from Eurogamer, in which, again, R9 390 beats RX480 in total score. Also, while R9 390 is not much faster than RX 480, the new RX 580 surely can not be slower than R9 390 - what do you think guys? While there are no direct RX 580 VS R9 390 comparisons, i would tend to think that at the very least R9 390 should be equal to RX 580. I would recommend to update that. But surely, i agree that R9 390X and GTX980 should be, without a shadow of doubt, superior to the rest mid-rangers.

But the main thing i'd like to talk now is the never-ending GTX 1060 6 GB VS RX 480 8 GB discussion and now VS RX 580 8 GB!

While i have noticed that over the past 6 months all AMD cards gained improved performance over NVIDIA and now RX 480 8 GB is closer to GTX 1060 6 GB than it ever was, it still does not beat it. Let me make a point once more from the newest RX 480 and RX 580 benchmarks.

1. Here is Tom's review of RX 580, in which 11 games have been tested in both 1080P and 1440P resolutions.

I have calculated the first, second and third places for all the cards in all of those games. If the difference is less than 1 FPS, i consider it a tie, but watch minimal FPS then. And here is how it looks:

RX 580: 1 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 1
GTX 1060: 2 3 1 3 1 2 1 2 1 3 2
RX 480: 3 2 3 2 3 3 3 2 2 2 3

While clearly RX 580 dominates the benchmark, GTX 1060 had more second places, and RX 480 had more third places; also RX 480 never had any first places, while GTX 1060 had four of them. In one game GTX 1060 and RX 480 tie; in another game RX 480 and RX 580 tie, so i wrote double same number places in these instances. This is direct evidence that RX 480 is no match for GTX 1060, but RX 580 is just barely faster than GTX 1060.

2. Here is Eurogamer's review of RX 580, in which 8 games have been tested in both 1080P and 1440P resolutions.

It's not a big deal to take a look at the results and calculate the wins. If the difference is less than 1 FPS, i consider it a tie, and there are no minimal FPS.

1080P RX 580: 2 1 1 1 2 1 1 1
1080P GTX 1060: 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2
1080P RX 480: 3 2 2 2 3 2 2 3

Once again the same picture at 1080P - RX 580 leading, with only in 2 games out of 8 falling behind GTX 1060. GTX 1060 ties RX 580 or losses to it in half the games (50/50 %). However, RX 480 never wins, only manages to tie GTX 1060 in 3 games and looses in 5 games.

1440P RX 580: 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1
1440P GTX 1060: 1 2 1 2 2 2 2 2
1440P RX 480: 3 2 2 2 3 3 3 3

The picture does not change much at 1440P - RX 580 now leads even more, with only in one game falling behind GTX 1060. GTX 1060 beats RX 480 in 6 games out of 8 with 2 ties.

3. Here is Anandtech review of RX 580, in which 9 games have been tested in both 1080P and 1440P resolutions.

The results of 8 games match in both 1080P and 1440P, except in Hitman, where there is a difference between 1080P and 1440P for RX 580, RX 580 and GTX 1060:

1080P & 1440P GTX 1060: 1 1 1 1 1 1 3 1 1 (2)
1080P & 1440P RX 580: 2 2 1 2 2 2 1 2 2 (1)
1080P & 1440P RX 480: 3 3 1 3 3 3 2 3 2 (3)

According to Anandtech GTX 1060 CLEARLY beats RX 580 in 6 out of 9 games with 3 ties. RX 480, on the other hand, only manages to be equal in one game, and loses to GTX 1060 in ALL games. I trust Anandtech the most, since they are the only ones who had the balls to test stock RX 580 VS stock GTX 1060.

Tom's Hardware and Eurogamer used overclocked RX 580 cards, stock RX 480 and stock GTX 1060 cards. Anandtech used all stock cards.

4. Hardware Unboxed quote: "previously GTX 1060 6 GB was 12 % faster at 1080P and 1440P, but now it is only 1 % faster" - this comparison is not apple to apple, since different games were being used when GTX1060 6 GB was 12 % faster versus when GTX1060 6 GB was just 1 % faster.

The final verdict should be no problem based upon what proof i linked.

1. Without a shadow of a doubt, GTX1060 6 GB is faster than RX 480!

2. When it comes to GTX1060 6 GB VS RX 580 - these cards should be equal, since in Anandtech GTX1060 wins, and in Eurogamer and Tom's Hardware RX580 wins, but it's a bit of a cheat for RX 580 win because of the RX 580 overclock.

That being said: RX 580 8 GB = R9 390 8 GB = GTX 1060 6 GB. Of course this is for now, and it might change after 3 months.

While i trust Hardware Cannucks and their results are definitely legit, their point of RX 480 > GTX 1060 6 GB is in DX12 games. In DX11 they have GTX1060 winning still. We can not base our final verdict just on that. Windows 7 is still a FAR MORE popular OS than Windows 10 and there are FAR MORE DX11 games than DX12 games as of now. Perhaps in one year this will change, but for now - not!

And this is an advice to YOU ALL - do not base your GPU ranking based on DX12 as it is not the dominant API subrank!

Are we basing results off an average of 4K? 1440? 1080P? Because the AMD cards scale noticeably better at 4K. In fact, like mentioned above the AMD cards have continually seen improvements with subsequent driver releases thus making original reviews or even benchmarks from 1 year ago no longer relevant. I'd like to see an extensive test using current drivers with R9 Fury and Fury X vs 980 TI, 1070, and 1080.
