Intel i7 920 D0 Owners Thread

Thread Starter
There should be enough members now to create a consolidated guide for the D0 stepping i920.

For those that are unaware, this chip is a newer revision of the original release of the Intel i7 920. It carries a different revision model (as displayed in CPU-Z).

The original i7 920's were C0 (under CPU-Z)

The S-SPEC for the new D0 chips is SLBEJ (the C0 is SLBCH)

Both chips have an intel rated thermal limit of 67.9C and a VID max of 1.375.

I have attached a couple of hours of prime95 (with HT disabled as I do not require the extra virtual cores).

I am currently running at 4ghz (20x200) at 1.18 vcore. I suspect it can be dialed down further (I am going to tweak it a bit more).

Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe V2 (bios 0502)
Batch# 3845B026
vcore: 1.18
QPI: 1.25
DRAM: 1.64
LLC: Enabled
All power saving features disabled
RAM set to DDR3 1600Mhz (7-7-7-20 timings)
Air cooled (lapped TRUE, rubber grommet modded with Kaze 3k)

Lets see some results.

Please be sure to post cpu-z screenshots, the chip batch number, load temps (under prime95 or linx to ensure all 4 cores are equally loaded).

Motherboard, and bios version would be a good help for those looking for the right combination of cpu and motherboard.

To get things rolling:

Mine:

Batch# 3845B026
Stable Overclock: 4 Ghz (200x20)
Vcore: 1.18 in bios
HT: Off
LLC: Enabled
Cooling: Air
Temps: 58-63C across 4 cores.

Thanks.

Are you finding that the D0's are hotter with less voltage like some are finding?

No but one thing I have noticed is that there doesn't seem to be a temperature drop of any signifigance with reduced vcore.

For example, when I first set up the chip and board, I had vcore set at 1.30 for 4ghz (as a starting point).

Going all the way down to 1.224 (which is a pretty big drop) has only shaved a few degrees off the maxed out load temps.

They require silly low voltage for 4ghz though. I just restarted my sig rig at 1.2 vcore and its currently running another round of prime without a hiccup. Thats less voltage than my golden VID (1.185) Q9650 needed for 4ghz...

I am testing 4.195 (19x221) at 1.225vcore and 1.325vtt. 65 minutes of Linx 25000 size so far with 56gflops. A board with higher BCLK (like classified) will rock with this CPU. I am walled at 221 with P6T V2. And my cooling.

I have a question. Since there's no real need for 8 cores disabling HT really helps with the temps right? But heres my question(no the question before that was not it) Is a 920 overclocked to 4 ghz but HT disabled still faster than a Q9550 overclocked to 4 ghz?

Absolutely.

HT does nothing for any of my games or benches (except vantage)

I have both an E0 9550 and 9650. the i7 920 at 4ghz beats them handily in a variety of tests.

The i7 boards also scale better with sli and crossfire (not really a cpu enhancement but it helps)

Ok, 4.2 at 1.225vcore(BIOS), 1.325vtt stable in 25 iterations of LinX for 1.5 hours. Here is the pic. Next, I prime it overnight.

So, I have 4.025 at 1.1675, 4.101 at 1.1875, 4.195 at 1.225. All LinX AND prime stable. That's almost linear gain with volts. Imagine what will this chip do at 1.5Vcore! It will taper off after a while but still.

I did not try any lower clocks.

My batch is B203. Looks like a freak chip.
