Not sure but 3849B040 isnt a very good batch . Anyone else have this batch?

The TJMax is set on a per-processor bases, not batch number or stepping. Most i7's are at 100, though some are set lower at 95. TJMax is not a value set in the CPU, you can't read in what the TJMax for that CPU is, you have to be told what it is from Intel, or you need to use your own hardware digital sensor to measure it and do some basic math to figure it out. Core sensors and TJMax are not an accurate method for measuring your CPU temps and become more unaccurate as you move away from TJMax.

Unfortunately, Intel did not provide the user community with any information about how much TJMax tends to vary. Based on my testing and reports from users, a 5C difference doesn't seem too unusual with 65nm and TJMax might vary by 10C in the 45 nm CPUs. The result is that two CPUs with the exact same model number might have different TJMax values and it also seems that there are situations where cores on the same CPU can have different TJMax values. For the 45nm processors, TJ Target and TJ Max seem to be similar but for the older 65nm CPUs, actual TJ Max can be 10C or higher for many processors.

I'm OCing with these settings:

base clock 195
multiplier 20
vcore 1.22
cooler scythe mugen 2

are load temps of 65 OK?

Should I push to 4ghz?

I have a 3901A237 and it is not too strong in the OC department. Posted about my processor being a bum OC'er and had a few verifications that this batch isn't exactly amazing. Personally I can't hit 4.0 gHz for my life with any combination of multiplier w/relatively high voltages. As soon as I kick it down to 3.9 it runs like a champ though...really really really frustrating.

Sounds good to me.

Start to worry if it pushes 80C.

Is that with HT on or off?

so...

these things are topping out at around 4.2 because of temps, even lapped with TRUE's ?

Yes.

Mind you, turning HT off will let you go higher.

Also I don't really see 4.2 as a big limiting issue.

4.2 with an i7 chip is quite a bit quicker than anything that can be attained with the older gen 45nm quads on anything short of phase.

If you compare clock for clock, my Q9650 at 4ghz gets eaten alive by my i7 920 at 4ghz in every single application.

Yeah. These things run hot. As was said, 4.2 isn't exactly bad however.
