Adopt-a-Folder for the Summer Program (AdoPPD Folding)

Hi OCN,

So I was thinking the other day about all the folding rigs that get powered down during the summer. Reasons can be due to excessive heat, the cost of electricity to run the machine while cooling the house (or just the cost itself), or even limited electricity during the summer for some regions.

This is sad, as folding components should continue to get their use during the summer months. From here, I got the idea of an “Adopt-a-Folder for the Summer” program. Members on OCN can either post rigs that they are unable to fully utilize over the summer and see if other members would be willing to provide a roof and outlet for the poor little bugger over the summer. On the flip side, members can also offer those resources to a seasonally orphaned system to help the cause as much as possible.

Clearly, loaning an entire rig or some components will require a lot of trust on behalf of members involved, so I’ve been in contact with markt to help out so things will go as smoothly as possible.

Also, if you would like to donate funds to the people offering to adopt folding equipment, that is strongly encouraged. Any support is awesome!

I will update this post with a list of what is up for adoption, or who is looking to adopt, as well as any changes to the rules or any restrictions that may arise as this program develops further.

Any suggestions on the program itself or the layout of this thread (this is my first attempt at something like this), then please feel free to let me know. Either by posting, or a PM.

Let’s maintain OCN’s PPD!

Also, thanks to wierdo124 for directing me to this post. It will let you monitor the usage of the foster-folder (why didn't I think of that name before... hmmm, I like it).

Rules and Other Information:
As it stands now, there are no formal rules or restrictions; this is simply being set up as a commonplace to find someone to pair up with. It will be up to individuals to determine how they want to trust another user, if they want to involve collateral, and if the adoptive user will be allowed to personally claim any of the PPD or not. Common sense would say to utilize an individual’s rep and trade rating, but again, it is up to the individuals involved in each transaction.

Complete Rigs for Adoption:
none currently

Components for Adoption:
1) User: Havegooda, Location: Seaside, California - I may have some 8800GSes that may need a home. Adopted!

Able to Adopt a Rig:
1) User: [pi], Location: Northeastern Connecticut - I live on a University campus for the summer, so I don't pay for electricity/internet. My room is small, but I can probably fit one or two more full rigs somewhere, especially (or more) if they're in some form of case.
2) User: removed
3) User: ProjecT TimeZ, Location: North Carolina.
4) User: BlankThis, Location: Montreal, Canada - I have 2 open PCI-E slots that I would be more then willing to populate with someones card(s). I am also willing to take whole rigs which will be kept in in a dust free and cool cellar. I only have a 500W PSU so I may be limited by power. All I ask is that you cover shipping costs both ways. Feel free to contact me.
5) User: RaBidRaBit, Location: Middle Tennessee - I am willing to donate one of my electrical sockets for the cause
6) User: Heroin Rob, Location: Vermont - Has space for a lot of rigs, but would like help with the cost for electricity.
7) User: ducrider, Location: Guyton, Georgia - If a rig needs a home I can make that happen too.
8) User: bryce, Location: North Carolina - I've got this huge room that I could fit a good amount of rigs in for the summer. I'm currently folding only on like 3 pcs since the others are pretty slow at it lol, willing to leave in owner's name but must fold for OCN Team and willing to leave it online 24/7 during the duration of the summer, shipping would have to be paid for by the owner.
9) User: procpuarie, Location: GTA, Ontario, Canada - can adopt two rigs
10) User: Tater Tot, Location: Ellisville, Missouri - I have a 22-28*C ambient temp. I can addopt either a rig or parts. They will 24/7 fold.
11) User: SmasherBasher, Location: Southern California - I can also adopt someone's rig (no case neccesary) and will set up a Logmein account for the user so they can check the status of it at any given time.
12) User: spartacus, Location: Grove City, Pennsylvania - Next fall (end of August) I would be willing to host 3-4 rigs in my dorm (initially. I'll have to see about space and outlets for sure). The electricity isn't charged on usage and the place has AC. I'd be able to have them running 24/7 from late August to mid December (with the exception of Thanksgiving week) and from mid January until the beginning of May (with the exception of Easter week). I'm located in Grove City PA, about 40 minutes north of the Burgh. For anybody interested, I don't care about my name getting PPD or whatnot. Also, I would prefer anybody interested to be within 1 or 2 hours drive time to save on shipping and to be able to take the rigs back during the winter break.

Able to Adopt a Component:
1) User: [pi], Location: Northeastern Connecticut - My main desktop is currently folding with an HD4850. If you have another ATI card that you won't be folding with over the summer, I will definitely put it to use.
2) User: removed
3) User: BlankThis, Location: Montreal, Canada - I have 2 open PCI-E slots that I would be more then willing to populate with someones card(s). I am also willing to take whole rigs which will be kept in in a dust free and cool cellar. I only have a 500W PSU so I may be limited by power. All I ask is that you cover shipping costs both ways. Feel free to contact me.
4) User: ProjecT TimeZ, Location: North Carolina.
5) User: ducrider, Location: Guyton, Georgia - I have a rig with a 8500gt that could be replaced with a better card. I am willing to adopt a card.
6) User: SmasherBasher, Location: Southern California - I will have an extra PCIE slot with room for a 4th card. ATI or NVidia doesnt matter. The best part is I will fold with your name with your card for however long you decide to leave it with me. I have plenty folding for me.
7) User: Kill4Thrill, Location: Portland, Oregon - I have 2 PCI slots I will be willing to donate for gpu use. PM me and we can work it out. I will help pay shipping one of the ways if need be. I got plenty of power to go around!
8) User: oregonducks45, Location: Greenville, South Carolina - i could make a home for something better than a 9500gt (will be moved to a secondary unit and the donor card will be ran off a brand new corsair 650tx), will fold in donors name, and pay for shipping back, house stays at 72 F
9) User: Dylan, Location: Florida- Ive got a spare PCI slot in my server. If it will run on 430watts. I can fold on it.
10) User: DaMirrorLink, Location: Coffeyville, Kansas - i can swap my card out for another card but i only have 1 pci-e lead and its a 500 watt
11) User: hitman1985, Location: Some military base with free electricity- currently building a am2 based folding rig, anyone that has a gfx to much i dont have to worry about bills, since i live on a military base so i dont pay snap for my power. just have to make a bit room in one of my side rooms and it can run 24/7 (in a chilly 68F surrounding), im currently looking forward to get a k9a2 which will be able to run 4gfx, dont have a psu for that kinda gameplay yet. but if a folder wants to borrow stuff i think it would be ok. i ll give the person all info necessary and complete access (remote or whatever requested) 24/7 to the rig to make sure its folding.
12) User: procpuarie, Location: GTA, Ontario, Canada - can adopt two GPUs
13) User: Tater Tot, Location: Ellisville, Missouri - I have a 22-28*C ambient temp. I can addopt either a rig or parts. I can do up to 2 parts in my sig rig. They will 24/7 fold.

Adoptions Completed:
1) Havegooda's 8800GSes to Mortimersnerd 26 May 2009.

I can definitely help with this.

I live in North Carolina, and can either fold with a whole rig, or you can just send me your video card (I have some open PCI-E Slots).

Ad me to the list

Why not start a small donation pool as well? I would gladly host as many rigs as I can, but the power bill will be outrageous.

I have the space though.

This is a good idea and I am willing to donate one of my electrical sockets for the cause but I imagine there will be a plethora of people willing to fold with other people's gear and a shortage of people willing to send their gear to someone else. Just a guess, we'll see.

I'm located in middle Tennessee.
