Max safe CPU NB vid for overclocking it to 2600mhz on x3 720?

Thread Starter
hello, i just registered here as i noticed there are alot of posts on overclocking the x3 720 and im hoping someone could help on stabilizing the CPU NB controller @ 2600mhz. My current core overclock is listed in my sig, basicly 3.5ghz @ 1.425 P95 for 12hrs+, it'll also do 3.6ghz @ 1.50 P95 stable, but i think the huge increase in voltage doesnt justify the extra 100mhz.

Now, my problem is getting my CPU NB controller @ 2600mhz stable. At that speed i notice apps are ultra fast at opening and everything in my OS is SOOOO much snappier, i want it @ that speed stable!! I got it stable @ 2400mhz @ +.275 (OCCT stable for 6hrs+), but even w/ +.35 voltage it wont be stable @ 2600mhz (blue screen & restart @ that voltage in OCCT after 3hrs). I'm thinking of giving it +.375, but is that safe? i dont know what the CPU NB controller voltage is @ stock as i can't find it anywhere, not in the bios nor in AMDs overdrive utility (it lists it but only as 1.2, which i know is not true, because im currently giving it +.275). I read its between 1.1-1.2 stock, so if its 1.2 stock then giving it +.375 is 1.575. i read that the limit is 1.5, so if its stock 1.1 then +.375 is safe as it'll be @ 1.475. any idea if its 1.1 or 1.2 on the gigabyte MA770-UD3?(googled it w/ no luck, manual & bios doesnt display it)

My core temps are still @ 54c, so not going near the 62c limit. I also read that my cpu/nb vid shouldnt be above my vcore voltage, any truth to that?

thanks in advance for any help.

PS i read giving the NB chipset an extra +.5 voltage might help stabilize the system from Tony, the OCZ overclocking guru. Any one experienced this in regards to stabilizing the CPU/NB voltage? Thanks again.

PPS Under the CPU/NB voltage options in the BIOS it just says "normal voltage" & then +.025, +.05, +0.75 etc all the way up to +.600. In the bios +.400 to +.600 is highlighted in red, so that would be the danger zone. Should i just follow that guideline and stay away from voltages highlighted in red in the bios? That would allow me to give it +.375 without going in to the danger zone (assuming its 1.1 stock voltage). mind u, under the vcore options the red zone is +.400 -.600, which would fry my x3-720, so maybe that's not the best guideline to go by.

I'd say 1.4v is a good NB voltage.

1.2v would be the default setting.

thanks shift, so +.375 (1.575) would do what exactly to it if it manages to stabilize it @ 2600mhz?

1.4V is probably too much. I run 3.65GHz stable 24/7 with NB at 2600+ and use 1.3V on cpu/nb. Your processor uses less power so start at 1.25V and work up. Maybe you will need 1.4V but, I would start low and work up.

It is snappy at 2600MHz.

i've tried those voltages already and it simply fails the OCCT test. Would raising the NB chipset voltage by + 0.5 help? what about ensuring the CPU vcore is higher than the CPU/NB vid, is there any truth to that?

erm, i said i already tried those voltages and nothing worked @ 2600mhz, so im thinking of giving it + 0.375. That means it would be 1.575, not 1.375.

My main questions remain though,

1.) any truth that giving the NB chipset +.05 voltage helps in stabilizing the system?

2.) what would happen if i gave it more than 1.5v?(say 1.575)

3.) Is the default CPU/NB vid 1.2 for AM2+ and & 1.1 for AM3?

thanks in advance.

I've found it's uncommon for it to take more than 1.35v nb to get 2600, might be your board or some other setting holding you back.

yes it must be my mobo as i read the synergy between the cpu/nb controller & mobo is very much dependant on mobo/chipset. Guess i'll just hafta settle for 2400mhz @ 1.475. I discovered that when i turn on my AC and put my TT Big typhoon fan to maximum it passes 8 hours of OCCT @ 1.55, so its apparently a heat issue. Fan on low and no AC and it fails (its 26c outside).

if anyone could answer my initial questions though id really appreciate it.

i don teven bother with nb oc'ing. ~2k or more is already good/ fast eunff. every chip performs differently, so you just might not be able to reach 2.6k on the nb. i have mine on 2.4ish.
