Does DVI to HDMI produce sound as well?

Thread Starter
if i use a DVI to HDMI cable, does the sound still come through like that? or would it have to be a normal HDMI cable?

DVI doesn't carry sound, so the HDMI cable will only be carrying the video signal.

Then why does the gtx285 (or many other cards) come with a sound cable (S/PDIF) to transfer sound and it says hdmi all over the box ?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowIm...d%20-%20Retail

Included is a dvi-hdmi connector.

Fact : DVI ( THE CABLE ) does not carry sound.

Is it possible the sound travels through the connector at least to get to the hdmi part.

The SPDIF cable allows sound to come through the HDMI port on the GPU, because normally only video comes out of the HDMI port on GPU's.

It should work, but you have to hook the SPDIF header on your motherboard to a header somewhere on your video card. And then you have to change a setting in Windows somewhere. Hopefully someone else can remember.

GTX 285 does not have hdmi out.

I know it plugs from the mobo to the card.
So that makes the card create and produce sound.
The card only has 2 dvi outs, and a hdmi connector.

So sound has to travel through the dvi outs on the card ? Into the hdmi cable.

LOL no answer ?
Sorry OP.

I havent tried it yet myself, i own a gtx285.

However until i try it, i have to say that sound WILL travel through the DVI PORTS, and into the HDMI Cable.

Until tested.
