X-Ravin's Cluster Project (New acquisitions, Page 15)

Thread Starter
So what happens when you work IT at a company that is throwing away 23 decent PCs? You build a cluster!!! I've never built one before so this should prove to be interesting. I've already done experiments on the similarly built clusters at Purdue. I know that F@H isn't truly a cluster program, but who cares, it's still fun to see what these rejects can do!

So without further ado, the opening photos.

Carting out the first load.

Anyone ever thought about folding on the highway?

The Fiancee is going to kill me when she gets home from work tonight. In all there are 23 PC's most of which are high end P4's. I know it won't be efficient, but it's just for fun and experimentation. Stay tuned!!!

It would be terribly low. Those are pentium 4 machines.
I suggest the OP to sell off the machines and get new GPUs.
You will save a lot of money on electricity and for a lot more PPD.
Well, you could do this, if any of those machines happen to have a PCI-E slot, you could stick one gpu in each, and get some massive points that way.

I think you could set up a cluster under redhat pretty easily, though if I were you id try diskless folding first, heres a good how to http://reilly.homeip.net/folding/.

Your going to want to get a huge switch like 30+ ethernet ports so they can all connect to the internet.

This looks like a cool project. Personally I have 2 p4s folding and they get around 300PPD each.

Alternatively you might want to sell those computers and just make a build purely for folding, 1 9800gx2 which is around 250$ can do more then 25 P4s easily and with allot less power consumption.

Parallel computing is really fun. I have about 7-P4 machines laying around, so I am going to keep a close tab on how you do it. You could do a Beowulf cluster using XP or many variations of linux.

A site I have been following for a while:
