weird pixelation/flickering/bsod problem. need you smart guys!

Hey guys,

Well this is the weirdest problem I think I've ever had with my computer! Sometimes with I start my computer up, I'll have white bars at the bios boot screen and then when it goes to windows, it willbe all pixelated with white pixels like a checker board. here is a pic of it.

Then it will go into windows and be so bad that you can't see anything. It's very weird because it just started occurring and only does it some times. I'll restart my computer by hitting reset and it will still keep doing it. Sometimes it stops when I pull the power plug out of the power supply, wait a few and put it back in. Then everything is fine for a few boots, then it will do it again or sometimes right away.

The last time this happened was on my last boot. Everything started fine, I was browsing the webs, then I got these black pixelated lines that would pop up all over the place when the screen would have hardware acceleration. I was loading a web page then. I also found that when I clicked on my desktop and hit refresh, the lines would disappear where they were on screen but would move to a different part of the screen, never going away.

Then I got a BSOD. Then the computer restarted and gave me the same visual errors but got into windows and they disappeared. This was the bsod error data given to me by windows.

Does anyone know *** is up or have an idea? I can tell you I'm running a 4870 at stock speeds right now, My processor is overclocked to 3.6ghz on a true with AC MX-2 paste, idling at 40 and maxing at 60 in prime. I don't have any stability issues when I don't have the lines so it beats me.

Anyone know anything, need anymore info? I 'll be in this thread like a dog with info if you need it.

thanks

Try a different video card and see if the problem still happens. Normally, all display problems like that are usually related to the graphics card going bad. If you try a different card and it still does the same thing, then it's time to format/re-install. Do the BIOS screens show up the same way or just when it gets to Windows?

^ Good God, did you have to quote the picture too?

My sister's computer had those same lines and artifacts for a month, even though drivers and temperatures were fine. The day before I ordered her a new graphics card, the current one couldn't even be recognized any more by Windows.

Now everything is fine with the replacement one.

okay sounds good, I'm going to try a bios update first and see. I did swap the graphics cards out and tried my brothers 4850 out in mine and it worked fine but my 4870 also worked with no problems in his computer.

I'll wait and see but an RMA wouldn't be a bad idea since the stock cooler on the thing already died!

One other thing, when it boots without these problems, it will not get these problems until a reboot.

Wait, which BIOS did you update? The motherboard or the video card? I've been following this to see if I can be of any assistance, but now that it's working due to a BIOS update, I'd like to know for which component so perhaps I can use this information to help somebody in the future.

I did a motherboard update and it's acting up again. It's definitely the video card.

Then I am suspecting that it could be the power supply.
