This has actually sparked some interested in looking in to setting up a night class at a local community college or something on "How-to Build and Maintain Computers, for Dummies" tongue.gif

Wow, that's awesome....

or, since many simply want it fixed without lifting a finger, just do what other PC stores do for 1/2 the price and help the community. Because it is quite silly what the "geek squad" will charge you to do things most of us could do in minutes for a slice of pizza and a beer lol

Yeah

I was told a story about how a *insert favorite insult* at Best Buy charged my Aunt $50.00. Yes, $50 to install a RAM STICK doh.gif
She said as soon as she saw that she almost slapped the guy.

She should have.

true, but fact of the matter is that most people would have no idea how to change it, or what kind of even replace it with. Granted 1/2 hour of googling would do it, but stil $50 is crazy.

You could buy 8GB of NEW RAM for your PC with 50$ nowadays..

Yeah, I love teaching people how to build PCs... Like my Dad. My new rig in my signature "The HTPC" I just built with him yesterday.. He used to build PCs about 20 years ago, but that was 20 years ago. So he picks up the CPU, looks at the socket, and says exactly this "What the hell? They're not using pins anymore?" lol.

But my sister watched, she sort of helped, she's getting better too, i've been training her in the ways of the geek.

I almost exclusively get paid in steak and beer for my work haha.

And the problem with doing it for people, is they always expect it to be perfect, done quickly, and never have issues with it. I find if you teach people how to actually do something themselves, they will see how much work it actually is and why some people charge so much. There's getting it done by Geek Squad, then there's getting it done by a case-modder who is a perfectionist, then there is doing it yourself (which is why we become case-modders, its contagious).

I definitely agree that retail stores charge way too much for the services to begin with, and you get nowhere near the quality of workmanship that you do from local shops, or just private repairman.

that is true, most people want it done 100% correct the first time. But i think the majority of them wouldn't care to learn ,although im sure some would.

And STEAK!? you greedy sob! lol

Yeah. I'm really thinking of turning our house into a little private "more family" repair shop.. I've got parts laying EVERYWHERE. I mean that too, let me clean the garbage out of my room and I'll take a nice big picture for all to see smile.gif

My grandparents are fortunate but unfortunate at the same time about technical matters.. They live 140 miles away, and both me and my dad fix their PC.. But then my uncle lives up there too, and does the same thing the best buy people do. He doesn't really charge them, but he annoys the hell out of them saying things like " do you want this installed?" After he's done "fixing" the HDD has 104GB of crap installed..

He installs bloatware!

Or this set for 50$ at my door:
