The Cooler Master Storm Sniper Club - Page 41

May I join this club please?

I absolutely love this case ... its incredibly spacious and well built ... likely I will not need another for a long time to come. Sorry about the crappy picture quality they were taken with a crappy mobile phone.

Anyway my system doesn't look that impressive, I'm more practically minded than aesthetically. Thats why this case is so awesome to me. The cooling, the cable management, even the padlock hole ... I'm struggling to think of a feature I wish this case had. Oh wait ... it could do with a black interior. Oh wait ... they fixed that now.

My 4870 is idling at 58 degrees which isnt too bad but am a bit concerned about. It is in my belief that the side fans and also the optional bottom fan (while not as much help as the side fans) would help with graphics card cooling.

I'll probably do some benchmarks when I get everything setup; partly for my knowledge and for anyone else who might be curious.
For the clarity of the cooling fiasco that seems to be going on, I measured Both my GPU temps, CPU temp, MB temp and whatever other temperature diode I could access using Everest. The side 200mm fan with stock dust filter had zero effect on my temperatures, with the fine mesh filter removed I saw a degree lower temps on my MB but nothing else. With the bottom 140mm fan installed I saw GPU temps decrease a couple degrees (by a couple I mean 4 on the bottom GPU and 2 on the upper GPU) With a 120mm fan installed in the 5.25" bays I saw CPU temps decrease by 3 degrees. Now my theory for why the side fan has minimal effect on internal temperatures (drum roll) its too far away, this may seem strange but its just too far from the components, that and it causes more turbulence than anything else. And, if any of you have ever felt the direction of the air coming out of a fan? Its not straight out but off to the sides at 45ish degree angles. Thus the air gets blown towards the back of the case, the bottom of the case, the front of the case and into the top 200mm fan. This IMO is actually a negative effect because the air coming up from the bottom fan would then be cancel out by the air being blown at it causing a dead zone, the same effect would happen with the air coming in from the front. Turbulence is the worse thing you can possibly have in a computer case you want the air to flow through it not get stuck and congested. Think about it, this may seem crazy but theres more to it. The best solution would be to duct the side fan to focus the air at the CPUs but I'm not a fan of ducting.

Adhmuz - Thanks for the clarification

Just got my Sniper Black Edition. Holy molly it's huge compared to my Apollo!!! As soon as I get my stuff installed I'll post some pics.

I just took a look at the HDD cage and 120mm fan bottom mount and it looks like they're all mounted from the bottom.

The manual is pretty weak; how do you take off the bottom of the case?

To remove the bottom of the case you need to have both side panels off and the case should be resting some how so the bottom can be removed, try the front but put it on a towel or something as to not scratch anything. Then with the side panels off feel along the inside bottom edge of the case for tabs, if memory serves me there should be 4 on each side. Once the tabs have all been undone or poped out the bottom of the case should fall right off. Hope this helps.

Just be adventurous, once you start taking it apart it's like playing with lego's. The tabs are around the base of the inside of the case, I think 4 or 5 on each side, just push them in a little bit each then start over until finally the buttom just pops off. The way I found easiest was to put the case on its side on the computer desk hanging over so I could see better, pry a little bit and it would just fall to the floor when it was ready.

This question has been asked before ... I know... but I was concerned ....

I was thinking of going with an EVGA Classified and it is eATX form. I have seen at least one picture with this board in a sniper. It fits...

My question is: will there be any leftover unused standoff holes on the right side of this MBO? I have read, for instance, that the Rampage II's is also eATX but the holes line up perfectly with ATX form and it extends a little wider to the right side (no big deal)... Is this the same with the EVGA Classified? I am concerned with shorts ect.. I guess the heatsink hole in the Sniper would be rendered useless due to the small shift ... does that sound right?

This is great info, +rep. You're dead on about the angle of the airflow, something I never noticed before. Like many people I just assumed it came straight out the back of the fan. I laughed at your system name too, its the 1337 speak version of my system name.

To answer my own question:

The EVGA Classified fits fine in the Sniper.

Will there be any leftover unused standoff holes on the right side of the MBO? No

Do the standoff holes line up perfectly with ATX form? Yes

Does the MBO extends a little to the right side? Yes: A full size ATX board is 12 in × 9.6 in. The 3SLI Classified is 12in/304.8mm x 10.375in/263.5mm. Just a little wider but no big deal for this case.

Will the heatsink hole in the Sniper would be rendered useless due to the small shift? For easy heatsink installation..Yes.

Hope this helps someone.

*sigh*

Intel is playing games with me, but hopefully I'll have a mobo replacement by Monday or Tuesday so I can finally put my stuff in this case D:
