here`s an idea...

Step 1: Find the No1 player
Step 2: Insult his mother
Step 3: tell him you are 'running' to your moon with 7 million crystal and metal that you `stole` from his mother...Note: be sure to give him the coordinates...
Step 4: cower in the fetal position on your moon and prepare for teh hammer to drop...

I can build an alliance depot, but right now i don't, Ive been working on getting defenses and mining facilities up to higher levels mostly. also, whats a jump off point?

A place for a bunch of fleets to leave from so they will arrive at the same time.

Anywho, quick question. I sent out colony ships yesterday and scored two planets. One has 282 fields, the other has 190 fields.

Should I scrap the 190 field one or keep it?

I'm just waiting for a shipment of crystal from a colony to start building a depot, should be ready soon.

190 fields isn't bad, it should do you fine for quite a while, i think my homeworld is 198 fields.
