It seems that if a new players just have a fleet sitting outside of his planet as "defense" some player is just going to come in and wipe it out.
Instead of building defenses should I bet concentrating on just putting up a small light/heavy fighter fleet above my planet as defense?
As a new player you don't really need the defense since there is "noob protection." But once you get a certain amount of points (eg. 5000) anybody can attack you. Other players who have around the same number of points can attack you.
I would build a ton of cargo ships and then search through the galaxy and find players who are inactive (i or I next to their name) and whose names appear gray. Then, send in espionage ships to find out how much resources are on the planet. You can also send 1 espionage ship on an attack mission just to check if they have any defenses. If your espionage ship does not come back... find another planet to attack; if it does come back send some cargo ships on an attack mission. Once you have enough resources from attacking other planets, then start building light fighters/heavy fighters, cruisers, etc.
