To clarify -
i7 is not being discontinued. Intel has decided that the i7 socket will be marketed towards higher-end CPUs (newer i7 CPUs will be released at a much higher price-point for servers and higher-end tasks and folks that are willing to spend lots of extra $$ for some more out-of-the-box performance)
To supplement the need for a lower price point for this new technology - Intel will release a socket i5 cpu and the prices will be more 'mainstream'.
As for the OP - congrats on the upgrade and don't listen to people who say "you should have done this or that" - we've all done our first upgrade and there are many things to be learned.
No need to bash anyone. There's always the option of upgrading further on down the line - especially at the rate that new technology is being developed these days.
