Performing Automatic IDE configuration halt

Thread Starter
I'm working on a dell 4550 here. After a windows automatic update restart, the cmos got reset somehow and since then I cannot get it to boot normally.

Ive manually reset the cmos, it says performing automatic ide configuration, and says strike F1 to continue and F2 for setup utility, the keyboard does not respond.

After a manual reset, the computer wont post , and sometimes i can get into the BIOS, and even then its a hit or miss if the keyboard responds in BIOS.

Also, after a manual cmos reset, and after the IDE configuration. It says system battery is low, but ive replaced it and it still persists. Ive swapped hard drives. tried booting with only the hard drive and no cd/dvd drives all to the same result.

and help?

Try using a PS2 keyboard instead of a USB ketboard.
Try resetting the CMOS again, but this time remove the power cable from the wall outlet.
Check that the contacts in the CMOS battery holder are making good contact with the battery. Have you checked the battery with a volt meter

the native keyboard is PS2. its a dell...

no i have not checked the battery with a voltmeter but i took another battery from a working computer and it still says battery voltage is low only when resetting cmos. battery is snug.

I always reset cmos with power cord unplugged.

we just got it to boot, apparently the external card reader was interfering with the boot sequence somehow.
