Sound card with USB/digital output? - Page 2

USB is terrible if you are looking for quality sound. And they come with their own build in "sound card" to them.

So even if you did hook it up to a sound card, it would not use the sound cards chip for it's audio stream, but it would still use the USB to communicate with your machine.
That seems strange to me.... I would have assumed that if the USB port can be physically connected to the sound card's audio processor, then it should be able to transmit high quality audio via USB to a USB-receiving piece of equipment (headset or speakers). Are you sure about that? If you are, that's a damn shame for USB audio devices...

100%, this is why all of the high end audio gear for PC's use 3.5mm or 6.5mm jacks.

Those are far superior at transmitting high quality audio signals.

Is this a permanent law of nature, or is it just that the technology hasn't been developed yet to allow for high-quality audio to be streamed via a sound card's USB output? Is it a connection/communication issue between the USB port and the sound card's audio components or can the USB port simply not transmit enough data quickly enough (I wouldn't imagine this last concern to be the problem...).

In other words, think we're ever going to see high quality sound cards being able to transmit high-quality audio via USB outputs?

bump, seven years later!!! (almost exact biggrin.gif)

But seriously, I was just googling the same...

Was browsing ASUS website and saw they had a new soundcard. And cause I have the strix 7.1 usb headset I was asking myself the same question as OP.

So in other words: if I buy a soundcard, I would NOT be able to connect my usb headset to it? Not if there is a 3.5/mini jack to usb adapter?

Or can it go via the soundcard's optical out and then via via ssomething to usb?

Or anything...

Or do I really have to but a non-usb headset for connecting it to those soundcards?

And if so, does 5.1 or 7.1 (so 6 or 8 channels) work on a single jack? (that is 1 or 2 channels, at least what I think...)

I'm audio NOOB as you can see (or hear tongue.gif)

ANY USB audio device does NOT use a single piece of audio equipment in your PC, period.

USB is a data bus, like PCI/PCIe. A USB headset is an all-in-one soundcard/headphone/mic.

You have a misunderstanding about what your Strix USB headset is. It is its own soundcard.

The USB headset is a completely stand along sound device.
You can plug it into a computer that doesn't have any soundcard at all and it still works.
The USB cable you plug in has a USB soundcard built straight into it.

However some new motherboards have special USB ports that provide cleaner power for use by USB audio devices.
It seems the OP and ASUSfreak are misunderstanding how USB headsets work.

The only reason to have a soundcard, is to produce better quality audio sound, which is then transmitted via a cable (usually a 3.5mm jack) to a set of speakers or headphones. They also usually have a good quality amplifier to help with the sound quality.

USB headsets are a different beast. They do not send ANY audio signal up the wire. The way they work is they have an internal USB audio soundcard, which connects to the computer, communicates digitally over USB protocols, and the only audio path is internal to the headset between it's internal USB soundcard, and the headphone earpieces. Plugging a USB headset into a soundcard is utterly pointless. It will not improve the sound quality one jot. A cleaner digital signal is not going to make a difference to the headset sound quality. The only thing that could affect that, is the quality of the headset's internal USB soundcard, or it's earpieces (speakers). I.E., you'd need a better USB headset. You'll also probably find USB headsets a slightly more expensive than ordinary ones, as they have the extra gubbins inside, converting the digital packets into audio.

There's no way to bypass the onboard USB soundcard on USB headsets. It takes a digital signal in (so adding a sound card won't make a difference to what signal is being transferred), and then poorly converts it to the analog signal headphones require to produce sound.

I would also like to point out there is some very bad information in this thread in case anyone reads it. USB is not poor for audio at all, it's just the chips in USB headsets are very cheap, and tend to not be very good. Some of the best PC audio devices are USB.... but the good ones tend to be the size of a box of granola bars, and wouldn't come close to fitting in a headphone.

By onboard this means "headset integrated", not "motherboard integrated".

There are pro level PCIe sound devices that will eclipse most any USB DAC. AFAIK USB DACS can be bad for real time / low latency applications in comparison, even if the output quality by itself is superb. Its been awhile since I have compared ASIO latencies across devices though.
