Well you do sit closer to a 24" computer monitor than a 40" TV... Although our 40" LCD is 1080p...

Anyway Krunk, the washing out sounds like a brightness/contrast issue. Just try turning it down and see if that fixes it. The reason why the picture quality is different is you said you just moved it? It might have a volatile memory for things like picture quality settings, so it might have forgotten when it was unplugged.

I would go pick up a Calibration DVD. It won't be as good as having someone professionally calibrate it but it would get you closer. I'm not sure how the Best Buy is near your home, but by me they do a remarkable job calibrating. One of the guys that does it is my friend so maybe I got better treatment. Since you didn't pay for the TV, I'd say pay for the calibration. If you're unable to afford that there are a few disks that make it quite easy to follow along and learn about how to calibrate a TV. I use the DVE - Digital Video Essentials Blu-Ray. They have it in DVD & HD-DVD as well. I had my TV fairly close, but some of the professional controls are what caused me to have BB come in. It'll make your TV look as good as is possible.

Also, something of note, I have noticed that just before the bulbs go out on certain projections they tend to get a bit brighter. I hope this isn't the case on yours as that would be a sizable investment for a gift. Good Luck and any questions just ask. I'm Subscribed.

I've done the convergence, and it improved a few things.

Used to be, when I was watching a movie, and I'd press PAUSE, I'd notice the words being slightly doubled. That has stopped, but the picture quality is still very muddy.

It seems to be the whites that are screwing it all up.

The best way to see it is to go to the end of a movie and watch the credits with a black background. The white words will have a white cload more or less around then. I have tried EVERYTHING in the color settings and this will not go away.

Is there anything in the back of the TV I can adjust if I take the back panel off?

EDIT:

I'll see if I can get a picture of it and I'm also downloading this to play in my 360 and see if that will help me adjust it.

IS that a plasma or an LCD..If its a plasma then when you moved it could be the issue. When you transported it did you lay it down flat or was it standing upright? If its an LCD transporation should not have affected it, aslong as there were no huge bumps or any impact caused to the tv.

What do you mean by "convergence"? Tell us the context so we can figure it out.

Quote:
The colors are pretty washed out, and anything that is white is so bright it bleeds over into whatever is near it on screen.
First issue: See if the saturation is set to 1.0?
Second issue: Bright areas "blowing out" and overwhelming nearby areas is a contrast issue. Turn down the contrast.

You should also look for a setting which lets you tweak the Levels, though I doubt it exists so I won't bother writing anything.

100% Contrast (no change)

300% Contrast

1000% Contrast

You guys are great.

Alright, this is what I get when I press MENU:

PICTURE:
-Brightness - Brightness settings from 0 to 100
-Color - Color settings from 0 to 100
-Picture - Picture settings from 0 to 100
-Sharpness - Sharpness settings from 0 to 100
-Tint - Tint settings. It is zero'd, but I can adjust it from -50 to 50.
-Color Temp - Adjustable to Warm, Cool, Normal
-Manual Convergence-
Converge Red
Converge Blue
Multipoint Red
Multipoint Blue
Save Multipoint
Undo Multipoint
Restore Multipoint

That's it in the menu that I can find.

I wonder if there is a service mode that will allow me to access things like Saturation....

There's another sub menu when I go to the MENU that's called INSTALL and it has a setting where I can chenge AV4 (the HD connection) to wither YPbPr or RGB. When I change it to RGP, the entire screen looks like night vision.

That's it really

Judging by that link, I don't think you need to adjust convergence unless the "colors don't line up".

Brightness is brightness, and I'm guessing Color is Saturation, so that leaves Picture to be Contrast. Try turning it all the way up and see if it causes an effect like in the screenshots I posted.

If Color = 0 is grayscale, then Color = 50 is Saturation = 1.0.

Color Temp is sort of like a not-very-tweakable white balance. Warm will make whites redder, Cool will make them bluer, and Normal should make them white (no change).

Tint you probably don't want to touch because I'm guessing it's meant to offset a tint in the source. It's either green (positive) and blue (negative) or magenta (positive) and blue (negative).

Also, take a picture of the screen with no light in the room, with a piece of white paper set to the side of the screen (so it doesn't get any direct light from the screen), so we can see if the cooling's really your issue. The paper is for normalizing the difference from real life color the camera makes.
