Get a board that supports PCIe for future proofing, dont get boards that has AGP slot

you can search around for another motherboard that has build in firewire. The A8N SLi has 1 firewire slot and additional ones if you need them.
Read this http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...1876770,00.asp In order to help you decide which processor to buy

I hear lots of things about these dual core processors. An X2 would be a great idea as far as future proofing goes. I'd be looking at like a $100 price gain for my build (easily replaced by a GPU and memory downgrade) but if I'm encoding audio or running only like 1 application will I notice a performance gain?

Tom's hardware doesn't have a comparison between dual and single core A64's. How does a dual core processor help SINGLE-tasking is my question I guess?

A 2.2 GHz with 1mb cache vs. a 2.0 per core 512kb per core pretty much. (+$100)

Opinions???

EDIT: Thanks for the LINK!!!!!

You will not see any performance when you're running applications that doesnt support multi threaded. Basically if you have dual core cpu and running regular apps. The other core in your cpu just sits idle thus only using one core to run the apps

edit: Look at my rig right now, i have Amd dual coreX2 but as far as performance it pretty much runs the same speed as my regular intel cpu since most of the programs are not coded yet for dual core

Thanks for the info on dual cores!!! MONEY SAVER!!!!

Thanks for the link too, sladesurfer!!!! I will read this one more carefully a little later on but I saw what they had to say about the 3700+! I definitely need to find out about the multithreading thing too. I haven't examined my software choices closely enough i guess.

You guys rule. Please any more input is appreciated. Let me buy you a round!!! cheers

If you're not afraid of overclocking and you want to save a few bucks, try getting your hands on one of the socket 939 opterons. You gain some L2 cache over the Venice core (like I have) and they're very cost effective for running single applications. Don't get stuck in the rut of only looking at Asus and DFI; I have an Abit and am extremely happy with its performance. Socket 939 is a nice way to go because you can drop in a dual core processor in the future when you need to upgrade. Try googling for system suggestions and also check some of the audio forums.

Well you guys have really been so great and responsive. Sladesurfer's shopping list was great particularly the GPU and hdd! Any future pointers are welcome.

A couple of notes:
I was thinking that the Asus board A8N-E would work nicely for me because of some key features
-supports PCIe (future proofing)
-supports next gen hdd's
-socket 939 (ram and future dual cores)
-*POSITIONING of the NB chipset (I will be replacing the cooler with something high-
profile and silent)
-*POSITIONING of the PCIe x16 slot (The fanson these GPUS are supposedly REALLY
audible or crappy and I can have NO sound! The replacement will be high profile.)
and I will be replacing this
So layout is EXTREMELY important.

On sound cards: I figure I only really need something that plays back nicely. These X-fi cards have lots of recording and MIDI features that I will be assigning to specialty products. (contrary to popular belief, a *****in sound card can't make you any money).

I checked out these opteron processors you mentioned, Pythagoras. Are they all skt 940? I can't seem to find one that has a FSB of 800mHz and is under like 200 bucks.

Thanks again to sladesurfer's cool link to that article picking apart mainstream CPU's; looks like having the ability to upgrade to dual core in the future (a la skt 939) is a good idea but dual core processors don't really have too much to occupy them yet.

Thanks everyone!! Keep'em coming!

They raised the price today. Could get a san diego core for like 20$ more on newegg, though they are pretty much the same thing. This will hit 2.7ghz on the worst stepping, 3ghz+ on the middle steppng and best. The san diego , i have no idea how far they OC.
