New build help, going i7 $2500

Thread Starter
Hey guys and girls just joined up today as you can tell, im building a new rig for my boyfriend for his b'day, i know he mentioned something about the new core i7 920 Cpu, he has a budget of $2500, mainly needs it for gaming and fast video/editing.. He is a overclocker himself on extremesystems known REP their but im building this rig as a suprise, need something that will game quick and will push his 920 to 4ghz without any dramas.. need great ram etc.. Thanks guys and girls (p.s all he needs is the hardware inside the rig, he already has a tower,WC loop, keyboard monitor etc..)

Wow, a girl on OCN!

$2500 is a NICE budget. You can get dual GTX 295's, a Rampage II mobo, an i7 920 D0, and some good G.SKILL RAM, and you're set.

And I wish all GF's were as nice as you.

If you're going $2500, don't bother with a bloodrage, get an EVGA classified or a rampage II Extreme mobo

As far as ram goes, I like the mushkin redline series ram, very nice ram.

Heh, I guess you're right. I'd go with the Rampage. Will edit post.

Hehe, I haven't tried the Classifieds, but good lord I love the Asus BIOS

Once I get a little more serious into the overclocking (when I watercool the system and push 4.6ghz+) I'll definetly be using the more advanced features of the mobo. As it stands though hitting 4ghz was cake with this mobo/D0 Core i7.

Just a note for you, the D0 is a newer release of the core i7 920 chipset, it overclocks at lower voltages(better) than the C0 does, so if you're going to get him a chip, make sure it's a D0, you can get a guaranteed one from Antares Digital(Where I got mine)

Definetly get an EVGA graphics card though, those guys have awesome tech support!

You said he has a waterblock, then you can get this card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130505

It's a gtx 295 with a waterblock already in it.

Yeah, I got myself a C0 on the way, but I'm only going to 3.8-4Ghz. tops. Already recommended the OP to Tankguys, the most popular.

umm sounds like you want a pretty dam good rig!
As for motherboard the EVGA X58 Sli board seems really good, possibly Sli 285 gtx's as for ram not too familiar with DDR3 ram as ive been out of the game for a while so im new to the i7's, im sure someone with more knowledge with ram will link you the best Overclocking/game ram for your boyfriends rig, Welcome btw

The OP said her boyfriend already has a case, but you're right, a HAF 932 would be in order. Good HDD recommendations.

If you really say it doesn't scale well, then yeah, dual 285's is OK.

And whoops, a good PSU. A Corsair 850HX is more than sufficient.
