How do you turn a bootable CD into a USB bootable drive

I'm trying to restore the OS on my netbook, but don't have an external optical drive. How can I get the contents from the bootable CD to a USB drive on an iMac so I can re-install the OS on my netbook through a USB drive?

i'm not 100% sure but i think this should work:

burn a bootable .iso (using ImgBurn) to a directory. Then transfer it to a usb drive, and go into teh bios and set it to boot form removable device.

that should work.

There is another way but its kinda oldschool. It involves a floppy disk and taking the files that are on if after you formatted it as a bootable disk and putting them on the USB stick.

If the bootable .iso doesn't work. post back and I' explain the other process in better detail and leave you some links.

I don't have an iso, I have a CD with contents in it

edit: a bootable linux CD that came with the netbook (opening the CD, there's a bunch of files and folders in it)

It's a little more complicated than that -- you have to make the USB bootable (put a bootsector on it) - you can't just copy the files from the CD onto it.

To OP:
Are you installing linux? If so hewre is a good guide:
it's for gentoo - but I think the basic instructions are the same.

Here is a good page of tutorials for just about any distro that you want to install from a flash drive:

If you're on a Mac, there's a really easy way to do this:

1. Download Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Drag it to your Applications folder or whatever
3. Open it
4. Make the CD/DVD your "source"
5. Make the USB drive your "destination"
6. Hit copy

I've done this to my OSX installation disk and use it to boot and install from an external HDD.
