TMPIN2 - PSU or mobo

In HWmonitor i get absurdly high temps on TMPIN2:

TMPIN0 (system) typically 40-45c (overclocked, idle)
TMPIN1 (CPU) typically 40-45c (overclocked, idle)
TMPIN2 (unknown) typically 80-87c (overclocked, idle)

At first I though it was my northbridge, but i upgraded the poor quality heatsink for Zalman. Still gets a little toasty, but not hot to touch, so I've kindof ruled that out.

PC Wizard reports temp as Power/Aux temp. What is this? The PSU? or something else on the mobo?

I had no idea PSU reported temps to the OS. If this is a real PSU temp should I be worried? It does get hot to the point of warming up the case externally when under load.

Feel the air coming out of the power supply. Is it hot?

This is all dependent on your PSU model, which you've neglected to display in your system information. If you have a spare fan laying around, put it on the front grille of the power supply, to create a push/pull system, and monitor any changes to TMPIN2. I personally don't like the idea of my power supply going over 80C in ANY situation, but it could be well within the manufacturers specifications (see documentation).

Most systems don't have a method of reporting the temperature of the PSU, unless you have something like ESA or a specialized OEM system, so I think it would be something else. On a lot of motherboards, TMPIN2 is just a "dead" sensor that isn't actually connected, so it'll give odd and erratic readings, especially if you see it jumping around 5-10°C with each refresh.

The air from the back of the PSU does get warm when all components are under load, but we're talking Sharm el Sheik in the shade, not death valley.

I'm suspicious of TMPIN2 because it typically reads around 79-80c on cold boot, rising to maybe 85-89c under load. It never goes below 79c, even if the PC has been off for like a day or two (and the PSU stays fairly cool until i start loading the system).

I'm leaning towards it being a dodgy sensor, but its the fact that it does change up on load that worries me (like i.e. it is actually reading something real), but I just can't see those temps being accurate.

PS I bought the PSU from Maplin about four years ago, couldn't tell you who makes it.

hey guys,

i have a secondary desktop with the following specs
MB/m2n32 sli deluxe
cpu/amd athlon 64 x2 6400
gpu/ 9600gt
psu 500w
ram/4 gb ddr2 800 mhz kingston

i ve been running XP for about 2 years with no probs, after installing w7 i tried running NFS Hot Pursuit...after couple of hours blue screen was
appearing accompanied with some lag ..i stopped playing that game i formatted once again my pc again with ws7 and cleaned all my parts as well ...after some months of moderate usage i mentioned that blue screen was coming up when i was converting videos or i was watching HD content..i guessed that should be a gpu error, i cleaned the case once more but then i saw something like melted cheese inside the psu fan..it was like plastic and i cut it..i have no idea what it might be..i ve been using this pc until today only for torrents..watching a movie can cause the blue error:/ after the latest error i installed CPUID HW monitor..everything seems quite normal except for TMPIN2 which reached 115 C..(my pc wont boot after the last error and hot dusty air was coming out from psu ) i think a new psu would be great, case fans might not make the difference..i haven't any bios settings configurations..
any help would be appreciated,
thanks for your time

Melted cheese in the psu is not good.I would replace it.
Were there any bsod codes?
As for temps in hw monitor, tmpin0=MB,tmpin1=cpu(not cores),tmpin2=dead sensor(ignore).I have 2 M2N32's and both read 128c.

We have a club here for your board(link in sig) stop by if you are in need of more help.

Good luck

thanks for the help so far gyro,

You have to listen to this..i loaded a game just to gain a new bsod codes.. after 1' i smelled something strange coming out of spu..suddenly a boom happened and rooms fuse shut...smoky smell stills being around.. i think definitely psu it is..just for history..my old bsod codes are : 0x00000019 (0x00000003, 0x854BF950, 0x854BF950,0x004BF950)..
before the "explosion " i had a look at temp values...all except TMPIN2 were between 42-62 C..cpu cores 42-6
any further ideas maybe?
thank you once more

TMPIN2 in Gigabyte's 700 series motherboards are the VRMs.

And I'm really not surprised they are running that hot given the 4+1 phase VRM setup of fairly low quality (3-transistor design).

Is your 720 BE unlocked? What heatsink?

He was responding to the op from 2009,not you.
AMD x3 720 cpu.

Glad it was only the psu,and that when it blew it didn't take anything with it.

Forgot the thread age... darnit!!! :p killerbee I'm not too sure about the ASUS motherboard; it could be something else like chipset. It may vary per board. But of course the x2 6400 has 125W TDP and is a fairly power intensive dual core so look out for that VRM cooling?
