the 2607 supports up to 965 but now they have a 970, 975 and are about to release a 980 - Does anyone know if these will run on current bios?

Stick with your 940. If you do upgrade, get a C3 revision 955 BE processor. Anything priced higher is most definitely a waste of money.

I'd upgrade the motherboard first, before anything. Get one that'll support upcoming bulldozer chips, it'll still support your 940 in the meantime, which should be enough to hold you over. If you've got DDR2 RAM, sell it, and buy DDR3 for profit.

Also, your power supply is major overkill.

the point is to keep current motherboard... I dropped a lot of cash for it and it's made of high quality parts. Plus I like it and I'm not sure there are any tri or quad SLI amd boards out there at the moment
I don't believe 950w is way overkill for 3 large video cards, 4 120mm fans, ram cooling fans and an H50 liquid cooler - oh and 4 hd's and countless usb hub devices? maybe it is but you're running an 850w. Why do you think that? Not trying to be an ass - trying to learn something. Was Looking into 955's - what is C3 and how do I find out if what I am buying is that?
9950BE up to 940BE was a tremendous improvement but my ceiling is 3600 in the winter and about 3475 in the summer - was hoping to jump up another 400 to 500 (4Ghz) before retiring this board. I know the 975 or 980 would easily do that but not sure this bios will accept them. Any thoughts appreciated

I updated the OP to include the latest BIOS 2702 (Beta). "Fix cannot adjust multiplier for AM3 CPU."
There is probably unofficial support for the newest AM3 chips. I don't see why they would not be compatible and tweakable. They are just higher binned versions of the 955/965.
