id probably go for the 1090T as the 1100T isnt on the cpu support list las i checked. ive seen people who have them working, but at what risk for a extra 100mhz, that and when overclocked they peak the same anyway.

Thanks for the tip. I saw a used 965BE locally for a decent price, but I think it will be gone by pay day. I am a bit bummed since it seems these chips are going up pretty high in price since the bulldozers are getting a bad rap. Pretty dumb IMO, seems some people have no patience and always need to have the chip the masses claim is best. Anyways just my little rant.

I did see your profile pics. The board looks so empty to me with the water cooled CPU. Very nice though thumb.gif

@jdthomas

I picked up a 1090T after all. I would say I am lucky when it comes to chips, as mine is currently running pretty nicely at 4.2 on air. The temp never went over 42 during some very heavy rendering, but the program did crash. It is Avid pro (video editing), and this program seems to like to crash even when things are not being overclocked.

Enough rambling, and to the point. I have two issues, one is that for some reason in my bios (latest revision) as soon as I start getting into higher multipliers or fiddle with the FSB it starts upping the voltage automatically. Even when I try to set it manually, it puts it up to 1.55 which is higher than I would like. When I put the FSB at 222 with a 15X multiplier it actually put it up at 1.6, surprisingly my computer was running very cool and nicely at this for a couple hours before I noticed it gasped a bit. However, it's my understanding anything in the 1.55V and above range can shorten the life of the chip significantly so ideally I really don't want those high of volts.

Now leading to the catch 22... I would like to squeeze a little more out of the system. I know very little of overclocking, and can't afford to fry my board, but for the Video rendering I am doing which is very low compression high bit rate stuff, I really need to squeeze all I can out of this system, I am 80 to 90% of the way to what I consider smooth editing performance with this chip clocked at 4.0 - 4.2, I haven't touched things like HT, and don't really understand the Northbridge multipliers relationship and what it should be at, though I currently have it at 10 since it seems it is sorta the standard. .. In short ( after quite the ramble) I am looking for some good numbers to key in for as many settings as possible. I really do have ideal cooling, including two 90mm fans using up a card slot just to blow icey air onto the NB and SB, which are both now barely warm, as upposed to the egg cooking heat they put out on this board without them.

Anyways, HELP?

hey goojah, looks like your doing very well infact, to get 4.2ghz on air is quite amazing, i dont see you squeezing any more mhz out of the processor without switching to water cooling.. however THUBANS love the northbridge so i would suspect trying to raise it to atleast 2600mhz maybe even closer to 2800mhz with the clock that you have... i will be available on IRC tonight sorry i missed ya earlier.. so hit me up and ill walk you through things a lil easier... also as far as your voltage is concerned, what are you using to read the voltages?? it is normal for it to vary a bit.... i have in my bios 1.45v however in CPU Z it shows it as 1.53... also ive noticed it in core temp it reads 1.47v but under a stress test it drops to 1.3v...

Thanks for the quick reply, I will try and find you on IRC tonight, but it's a bit tricky since I am on Tokyo time, and work a bit tonight. Tomorrow is my day off so if not tonight, maybe tomorrow night. I do appreciate it.

So as for the voltage, it is in my BIOS, I will download CPU-Z a bit later, I am rocking linux at the moment and it doesn't seem to want to wok with wine. I have a dual, OS system though. The only other reader I suspect was broken, I forgot the name of the program at the moment, but it was always reading 1.47, but would sometimes switch for a half a second to 1.35. . Although if I remember right it did show the 1.6 as well as my bios. Strangely I have seen the voltage switching in my bios a couple times with this cpu. Never saw that before. Though in the bios it seems to only happen the initial moment I view the V-core voltage, then it goes back to 1.55 or whatever. I did notice on this thread back at page 14 or something like that someone said they had V-core showing at 1.7 !! I just did a fresh bios flash just in case it was somehow corrupted, and will spend a bit of time checking to see if it is still doing this. Until I have that bit sorted I put my cpu down to 3.5 just to be ultra safe. I could definitely see this being a false reading due to the temps I was seeing at 1.6, but in the 24 hours or so following that things seemed a bit glitchy, though they now seem to be back to normal now. The store I got the CPU at has a very good return policy, so I am not ultra concerned, except that this was pretty much the last 1090T this side of Tokyo.

i would also recommend installing windows on a separate partition or harddrive, maybe even a virtual machine, and install asus probe II as it will give you accurate readings!!! then you will know what its really doing

Sorry, I meant just I have two operating systems, but they are on separate hard drives. Actually I have 3 operating systems, and at times more. Sorta a rotating platter of what I need from Linux, or just curiously trying new Distros. I will download asus probe II (I presume from the asus website?). I have less than an hour before I have to go out again, but you've given me some good starting points till I can connect with you on IRC. Thanks!

OK, so I may have just missed you again since I slept in after a long week. Your 12am is somewhere around my 3pm, yes.. I really slept late.

So just in case we can't connect tonight, here's what has since happened.. With asus probe two the voltage was indeed hitting 1.55 not matter what I set it at in the bios. This was with it clocked anything higher than 3.7 I believe. The only good news here perhaps is that it fluctuated far less than it did at the lower settings, between 1.55 and 1.57. On the lower clocks the voltage seemed to be all over the place.

So here is my latest conundrum in an attempt to avoid the high voltage, I reverted to bios revision 2607, knowing full well that the multiplier could not be adjusted to see if the voltage problem would still be present if I tried overclocking with the FSB. Sure enough the voltage problem was resolved, and I was able to reach a possibly stable 4.1 OC with a FSB of 155 and voltage of 1.53. However, PC Probes alarm went off for the VDDBN voltage, which keeps hitting 1.58, and occasionally 1.6. though most of the time is it between 1.52 and 1.55. I have no idea what the VDDBN is, but my CPU is idling at 30 - 32, and under load it hovers between 43 and 47, and the motherboard is sitting pretty at a nearly constant 30. This is using various rendering programs and Kombuster as I Iack cpu stress testing software.

So that's about where I'm at.

personally i would go back to the latest bios, the voltage jumping is normal, and your still perfectly fine.... bottom line is if you keep the CPU cool, and its not crashing on you, id say its fine.... in my bios i have set 1.45 however i still hits 1.55v according to the monitors, but this does not concern me as the system is 100% stable, even after 48 hours of prime! also remember when using core temp... add a 9-10 degree offset, as it reports lower than the actual temps! and do you have cool and quiet enabled or disabled?????
