post #191 of 219
I have cool and quiet disabled. Before switching back to the latest bios, I am curious on the VDDNB, How high is really too high for the voltage. I reduced the FSB to 232 and the VCORE is at 1.52 or something like that now, and other than the VDDNB hitting 1.62 on occassion (usually 1.52) the system seems very stable with an idle temp around 30. This is with 3 different gauges including the bios. I'm not sure if that makes a difference with the temp offset, but yeah. I really did my research on coolers before picking this one, and have artic silver on it, sooooo... maybe it's true?

If I do go back to the old bios, what voltage would you personally worry about, again I have seen 1.6, but it stays nice and cool there, and like I said I would like to see if I can squeeze a bit more, but I imagine if I start hitting 1.65 this could be the danger zone with or without low temps?

Finally, assuming I don't reach you on IRC anytime soon, could you give me a brief walk through on how to achieve the 2600 NB frequency? Frankly I am less worried about frying the motherboard than I am the CPU, since a new MOBO is in my sights, though I am trying to wait for ddr4 RAM. It will be hard to give up the Crosshair II though, as I really love all the copper which goes great with my 465 GE copper GPU wink.gif

@jdthomas

Sorry we keep missing eachother on IRC, I went to an Onsen this weekend, and got back with barely enough time to get to work. It will happen sooner or late I am sure. In the mean time, I've had a bit more success Overclocking on the new bios, it's really weird.. go back and forth from bios to bios a few times, and suddenly the bios that was acting wrong is acting a little bit more normal. 3rd time reinstalling a bios is the charm? So the voltage is more predictable, but still seems a bit off.. but now just using the multi I seem to have a stable OC at 4.2 with voltage at 1.55 and only occasionally hitting 1.57. With a combo of multiplier, and FSB I actually got it over 4.3 and it was stable for a full day before crashing. I don't need it that high though, and I am hoping with your help tweaking the other stuff that it will be a bit more zippy at 4.2. or even 4.0, 4.1... whatever.. performance over numbers is my philosophy.

gooja first thing to remember is that when setting the nb and ht is never set the HT higher than the NB, it can be equal and lower but never higher... also the NB is dependant on the FSB so if you raise the FSB then ur NB will increase as well. for example i have my NB and HT @ 2600mhz

NB multi @ 13x (default is 10)

FSB @ 200 (which is default amd FSB)

200x13=2600

no voltage increase was necessary.
as you go higher in core speed it may be necessary to raise NB further, for 4.2ghz core id think 2800mhz NB would be beneficial
hope this helps!

also i have cpu tweak control set to auto, this may be the cause of the voltage fluctuation as its doing its thing, not sure though as ill have to do more testing and report back on this.

make sure you stress test your system after each change, dont just run the system for a day or so and call it stable because it didnt crash..... prime 95 or intel burn in test will do the trick!

stability over performance is always my philosophy!

Hey jdthomas, I did catch this post early today (yesterday) but I fell asleep at the wheel shortly after. I drank quite a bit yesterday tongue.gif

I did use the information you gave me though, and I seem to have a very stable system going right now with a HT of 2600 a NB of 2600 and a 1090t chirping along nicely at 4.0ghz. Prime and PhenomMsrTweaker together have helped me out a ton, since I can up the voltage and cpu speed while keeping an eye on prime, rather than rebooting and fiddling with my unpredictable bios voltage setting everytime... so much easier!! Prime runs stable, but I am just running the blend test. I did run the other tests successfully at a slightly lower clock, and have little doubt they would run for a good bit, but the temps do creep up. With the blend test it peaks at 48c, and with the most extreme rendering tasks I throw at it in the real world it stays below 45, and is working much quicker with the HT and NB up. With a hot Japanese summer on it's way I probably won't try to get back up to 4.2 until the fall. But I am pretty confident if I put a second fan on my cooler it won't be a problem for the cooler months. Fyi, my voltage is now stable at 1.47. I did this by reverting to the 2607 bios, and setting it at 1.47. This lets me bring it up a bit with PhenomMsrTweaker if need be, but if I set it any higher in the bios, the bios seems to take control again and it goes up into those 1.55+ volts. With the 2702 bios, I could do a bit of what I am doing now, but it still seemed to have a mind of it's own at times.

Sorry if that was long winded, but I am hoping this is useful to anyone else having similar issues.

I will still would like to talk things over with you Jason, but I have an early day tomorrow, so it may not be for a bit.

still not sure about the voltage quirk, bios 2702 is a beta bios so maybe when its out of beta will work better for you. i dont think its all that big of a issue as its just a annoyance, i set my voltage to 1.45 in bios and asus probe II reads 1.55 volts. core temps reads 1.47v but im not concerned with this as long as the CPU stays cool.... look at it from another prospective serious overclockers jack the **** out of their voltages to achieve 5+ ghz, of coarse they are using liquid nitrogen, but they are keeping the CPU cool. as far as the life span of the CPU is concerned by the time its ready to die on me it will have already been replaced by a newer system anyway!

Yeah, my plans have been to gift this motherboard with the old 9950 to someone deserving when the time comes. I am trying to hold
out for the crosshair 7 and 700 series gpu's . Combination of 7 being my favorite number, and figuring it will be good timing for me since the Crosshair 6 must be just around the corner, and if I buy a whole new setup right now this misses will be pretty pissed wink.gif

As for the voltage, I kinda felt the same about the cpu lasting longer than I need... but... since with my older bios work around has me at the same OC with .10 less voltage I see no reason to use 2607. I didn't however realize it was still in beta. Will they really release the non beta this late? It would be awesome if they did, since it would surely fix this and maybe even have another plus or two.

Real quick question... What is up with the TLB fix? I read somewhere that by disabling it you could get 30% more speed out of the CPU, but the program that is supposed to keep windows from re-enabling it wasn't working for me due to some sorta missing file. Any sorta truth to the 30% increase?

ignore the TLB make sure that is turned off!!! that is for the original phenom cpu's that were flawed... the TLB fixed the stability issue of the CPU but up to a 30% performance loss

What I read about the TLB said that Windows 7 automatically enables it even if it's turned off. The catch is that site had a link to a fix which I tried, but the fix did not work and seemed to create some issues (Virus?) Anyways I rolled back my computer and deleted it with no adverse affects since. But yeah.. just curious if this is true, because obviously if windows enables it I would want to fix that, and it could explain some less than perfect performance when I start loading effects onto my videos during edit.

As for my overclocking, I am now at 2800 NB speed with 2600 HT with no issues. Prime gets hotter than I'd like, but again in my real world uses it stays below 45 (usually below 30), which I am fine with. Now what else can I overclock! tongue.gif
