Antec 1200 Mods for Function13 - Page 3

Here's the low down: rad must mount external on back. Here's how I did it:

The rad is securely supported and does not suffer any stresses nor does the chassis of the A1200.

It's one of those simple yet effective solutions that actually required several processes to effect. Have a look at what's involved.

Rad needs to go here (chassis is face down on the protective pad).

I determined the length of the all thread rods and stand offs and cut them.

Each rod gets a cone shape ground on the end with the benchgrinder and then is re-threaded with a die.

The PA120.3 get's tapped to 8-32 to match the rods.

A nylock stop nut secures the rod to the rad.

Spacers are cut to prevent the fan frame from deforming under the load.

The fan is modified to accept the spacers using a saw and pliers to remove these little tabs

I used screws just to show...but the radiator housing is too thin to expect it to hold screws without using stop nuts...which could be a real PITA to the end user...hence the all thread.

I am using thumbscrews because the rad will ship seperate from the case to avoid damage in transit. I want it easy for the end user to assemble.

More on the mods in a moment

I am swappingout the stock fans for some Antec TriCool Red LED fans. In order to use the very nice speed controls provided I would have to do some surgery.

Stock fan. The BRY lead is what I will have to cannabalize for the new fans.

New fan has identical PCB and lead so I know this will be a cinch.

The patients have undergone anesthesia and are ready for the organ swap.

A relatively painless procedure. Now I can plug the fan right into the chassis and use the backplane speed control.

I'll repeat this operation with the rotary speed controls and be done with one phase of the fan mods.

I know I say this almost every build but this is one of the tightest, nicest looking loops I have devised to date.

First lets look at the PSU because the pump will have to work around it.

This is how the pump needs to mount. There are no leads there on the PSU and it's far enough over to let the feed line run down from the reservoir without interfering with the monster size eVGA GTX295 LC.

So I made some brackets to put the pump in the desired postion.

The brackets are far from complete. Isolator grommets will decouple the pump from the bracket. The bracket will get dressed and painted black and will attach to the floor of the case with strips of industrial velcro to facilitate installation and maintenance.

I popped a hole in line with the port of the PA120.3 and stuffed an appropriate sized grommet in it and there ya go

Now I tried two different configurations and I will let F13 decide.

Here you see a Delrin T and the exit tube comes up through the existing hole in the chassis.

Here the tube runs in through the lowest PCI slot. Now if this slot is going to get used option 1 remains. But I kind of like the simplicity of this. Less fittings means less chances for leaks. But on the other hand the T does make and ideal drain port. It's a toss up for me. Either one works fine.

Here's the block of the month...the Heatkiller. Gotta have it.

This is what I like to see: simplicity in a loop.

More soon.
