Can I restore non-RAID disk image onto RAID 0?

Thread Starter
I currently have two identical WD 640GB Caviar Black HDDs. They are not in a RAID configuration right now. Windows 7 64-bit.

I want to setup a RAID 0 with the two HDDs without having to reinstall all of my software. Tell me if this will work:

1. Create Backup Disk Image on external hard drive.

2. Reinstall Windows 7 from DVD. Format HDDs during reinstall of Windows 7 in RAID 0.

3. Once Windows 7 is reinstalled, restore from disk image on external hard drive.

Will that have me back up and running in RAID 0 without having to reinstall every stinkin' piece of software? Or will there still be major gaps to fill? Heck, can it even restore the image in RAID 0 if the disk image was made in a non-RAID configuration?

Depends on the backup software. I was rather annoyed to find out that Norton Ghost will not deal with RAID arrays (at least not the version I used). I'm sure that something out there will, though.

You can download a 15-day trial of Acronis True Image Home and do this. I've done it before.

1). Use Acronis to clone your current system to the external disk

2). Boot to the external (via a regular SATA cable or eSATA - USB 2.0 takes too long)

3). Setup your raid array

4). Use Acronis to clone your previously external disk to the new RAID 0 array.

Acronis/Windows will see the RAID 0 array as a single drive (as it should) so it does not matter if the clone was created from a RAID 0 array or not.

*Edit*

You should also be able to have Acronis clone the two seperate disks into one clone - you shouldn't need to clone each disk separately.

Anyone know about the image created by the "Backup and Restore" function in Windows 7?

I think that may work... but I am not sure because I do not use backup software to backup my PC. I just go find the files I need or have importance and back them up in a folder, then just wipe my machine and reinstall. Sure it is time consuming but it sure beats the hell out of possible compatibility issues with your backup and some hardware or drivers and whatnot.

That is a limitation of your BIOS, not Ghost.

I have used Ghost to work with images on three different systems with RAID arrays, never had an issue. Once the controller sets up the array, it looks like a single drive outside the BIOS..

Acronis is $23.99 after promo code EMCLVML65 on newegg and ($3.99 after $20 MIR!)

FYI - Full retail is around $40

It's also got a ton of other features. You can backup anything from specific files and folders to entire partitions or you can create an entire disk image.

It also has a feature called Acronis Secure Zone which when run, allows you to instantly revert any changes that were bad for your PC. (i.e. testing software or settings)

I have a similar situation. What a bloody exercise in frustration.. Linux is looking mighty good right now.. anways..enough venting. This is what I did: I create backup images using Ghost, Acronis and windows own backup image making app. and moved them all over onto a 1 TB drive used strictly for that. Windows would refuse to restore image, and Acronis had other issues I won't go into.

Okay... here is where I am at so far: Norton Ghost would insist on renaming my newly created Raid 0 array as something other than "C". It installed to the array, so I was happy with that, but I knew having the OS called drive "H" was going to be problematical booting up.. the curser would just stare at me blinking.. nadda.. I went on a hunch: under the assumption that if there were no other hard drives, or DVD Roms there..just those two Raptors in Raid array 0.. Windows would have no choice but to boot from it. (Assuming the MBR was well and no other issues came into play).
And guess what, It did! However.. my other 4 drives were not installed yet, and that's were my apps, Games and backups were located. The OS was fully functional, but the links to the other apps, games, etc.. were broken as the HD's were not installed yet. Now this is where I am stumped.. When I hot plug them in, (ie., restore the power to those drives while the system is up and running, Windows 7 will see them, map them, apply the right drive letter to them, and I can run everything normally...EXCEPT, when I re-boot: I get the bloody blinking curser again! POST sees the arrays, sees the other drives, but the system will not boot! But if I disable all the drives, except the two drives that are in raid array prior to booting, it will boot Windows 7. Can someone tell me what the heck is going on here?! Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
