The real Green Machine (lots of pics, have fun 56K) - Page 11

I'm glad I could help

Although I don't have EPP, I don't need it to be honest. As you're read I'm running the RAM with 450MHz synced to the FSB with 4-4-3-12 1T clocks, although they are specced at 5-5-5-18 2T. And that on stock 1.8V, leaving them cooler than the standard 2.1V

I'm pretty sure the 1066 sticks are more than sufficient, but if the 1200's are only minimally more expensive (I paid 5-10€ more for them), than I say go for it. Even if you don't need the extre speed, it is good to have as much headroom as possible.

Keep me updated on your plans and/or build log!

Update from XFX support.

[ 7/12/2009 5:59:50 PM] I have updated to the P08 BIOS directly after installing the board. I did this via your boot CD. According to various reviews, the board is supposed to have an FSB voltage of up to 1.5V, but the highest selectable voltage is only 1.4V. I am struggling to clock the FSB higher than 450MHz because of this.

[JAMES 7/13/2009 4:26:55 PM] Hi, thanks for your message, the achievable voltages depend on the CPU as well as the board. The supportable FSB voltages on the board in the BIOS will be shown in green, and going above this will be overclocking the board and may void the warranty. kind regards, james.

[ 7/13/2009 8:35:06 PM] Hello James, thank you for your reply. I am sure that the CPU isn`t limiting the selectable VTT as I have tried three processors on said board. In every review on XFX`s 780i board that I have found writing about the voltage settings, they have all stated that the VTT is adjustable to 1.5V. The reviews include the ones of Hard[OCP] and Overclock3D dot net, respectively. As you know this mainboard follows the reference design on nvidia, just as the EVGA 780i SLI, which are both also capable of reaching said 1.5V. So I am fairly sure this is more of a software issue than anything else. I am well aware that running the FSB at these voltages is over specified values and may void the warranty, but frankly, this doesn`t help resolve my issue not being able to up the voltage to what should be possible. Thank you for your time, and I will be waiting to hear from you again soon regarding this issue.

[JAMES 7/14/2009 5:18:05 PM] Hi, thanks for your message, the 1.5v setting should be there but if above safe parameters these should be shown in red. can you tell me what bios version is on the board? kind regards, James

[ 7/14/2009 5:56:39 PM] Hi James. The 1.5V setting is *NOT* available. The highest I can select is the 1.4V, 1.5 isn`t even showing. Not red, not grayed out, it simply isn`t there. And I`m running the newest P08 BIOS that I ran off of the bootable CD I downloaded from your download section.

I think he is finally beginning to see the picture. Pity that it had to take two days since I initially asked the same question in the initial ticket.

Better late then never!

I never saw anyone lap a CPU without an IHS. That was awesome .

Yeah it was pretty awesome. Scary and cool at the same time.
I was just kneeling there, CPU in one hand, polishing cloth in the other, thinking "yeah bishes, I have a shiny bling die, muhah!"

When's your upgrade coming? What are you getting?

Small update:

As you saw before, I was having temperature issues after the IHS removal, mainly caused by too much TIM and an uneven alignment.

Well I took it all apart again (god that takes long with a case) and re-polished the HS and the die:

I then applied about half as much (or less) TIM as previously.

You still need to spread it out though, as there is no heat spreader on anymore and the entire die surface gets hot.

I then added even more washers to the TRUE.

GIVE ME PRESSURE!!!

Well the results are better, but not outstanding. Load temps:

As you can see, the contact on the first two cores is better than on the second set. I am sure that if I get them both to equal heights, the temperatures of both cores should decrease again, since the contact would then be complete.

Does anyone know which die (when looking at it) is the second one?

Well, it's understandable that he wanted to warn anyone who may not be as experienced/crazy with OC'ing, like some 12yo dude who is just fudding around with the BIOS settings...

Now I'm thinking that my last reply may have been a bit harsh

Nice! Have you finally (and hopefully) switched to the green side of things?

The backplate just arrived. I shall begin my new project.

[JAMES 7/15/2009 10:02:18 AM] Hi, thanks for your message, if the option is not available then this voltage is not supported on this CPU / board configuration. If this voltage was supportable then it would be available. kind regards, james.
Huh, am I missing something here? I don't think the Q9550 is restricted to a VTT of 1.4V, is it?!

Oh I forgot to add that I ordered four of the 252CFM Delta fans out of the States! they should be here next week!

I just hope the sheer air blowing power will bend the mainboard of CPU in any way, just like too much torque bends a car's chassis...
