How much watts do hard drives take up?

Thread Starter
So, i thought my hard drive was broken (640gb), went and brought a new one. (500gb) few weeks that broke down the line (at least i thought so) so i went and brought another one (500gb seagate im using now)

Now i've come to the conclusion that the hard drives never broke, something else did. I now have my other 2 hard drives just sitting there doing nothing, and im about to make a new build.

Just curious, how many watts to these hard drives take up? under load and off load.

Samsung spinpoint (500gb)
WD cavier (640gb)

Look at the sticker on the drive.

For example this Hitachi I am holding says 12V - 700mA and 5v - 500mA.

A bit of multiplication and I get 8.4 watts on the +12v, and 2.5 watts on the +5v, or 10.9 watts total.

Does anyone know if those numbers are purely from the 12V rails?

No. Hard drives draw power from both the +12v and +5v rails.

Hard drives can hit 35w momentarily during spin-up. Then most recent hard drives consume less than 12w. Eco/Green/Laptop drives tend to consume less than 8.

The spin-up power draw can be an issue if you have lots of hard drives. Advanced controllers have something called staggered spin up which turns on a few HDs at a time.
