i5 is basically an i7 without tripple channel mem, and does not overclock as well, a 2.6ghz i5 only overclocks to roughly 3.4-3.6 vs a i7 that goes to 4.0+, BUT stock speeds they perform identically

Oh? Where did you get the overclock info from? i5 isn't even out yet.

What happens then? He won't be able to run any new browser with that machine?

I would go with the intel Q9650, It cant quite match up to the phenom 2 but its so close you wouldnt even notice exept in synthetic benches, that way you could possbly get a few more months before you get that upgrade itch and see what the prices of the processing world are like then. I have heard that amd will be releasing two more PH2's this year after the 965 and are going all the way to 3.8ghz stock clocked, if that is true then it might be worth waiting to see what those prices are like... But of course, if you always wait for the newest and bestest, you'll never buy.

As much as I love AMD, I'd say stick with what you have got until the horizon is a bit clearer, wait for the 965 and the i5's and see what coems out as the better bang for buck CPU, then go for that

Sorry but the Q9650 is faster clock for clock than the Phenom II quads. It will also clock higher for 24/7 use. All at a higher cost of course.

i would say go with amd, the experience in overclocking the phenom II has been a blast. so many things to tinker and would keep you busy for a good 2 weeks

I'd say bang for your buck, go AMD. If you want top performance it will be i7/i5 but that will be more costly. I say stick with your current rig. Most games are GPU dependent anyway. JMO
