Without having to read back through the whole thread are C2Q's out performing C2D's with the same graphics cards by any significant amount?

Yes, it's a very noticeable difference.

Based on my own testing, I do not believe that this game makes use of more than 2 cores.

I've just ran the benchmark twice, completely maxed out at 1920x1200, 16xQAA, on my sig rig.

here are the results:

i920@4.0GHz w/4 cores (ht on = 8 threads)

test 1: 108.4
test 2: 101.7
test 3: 91.3
test 4: 96.5
overall: 98.6 fps

i920@4.0GHz w/2 cores (ht off = 2 threads)

test 1: 107.9
test 2: 98
test 3: 89.7
test 4: 95.9
overall: 97 fps

It always cracks me up how quickly people around here latch onto a idea and begin talking about it like it's an absolute truth ... without taking the time to perform simple tests on their own in order to confirm that what they're saying is true.

I'm not trying to single anyone out, I just see it happen ALL the time around these parts.

So consider this a challenge ... can anyone provide positive proof that having a quad core helps in this game, apart from a frame or two here or there that's probably due to the quad handling some background OS processing that the dualie can't while running this game?

Been telling people that say thing ever since I got here, but few believe you. Goes hand and hand with the very popular myth that dual cores bottleneck high end video cards. I have a pretty good article in my sig that duals do as well as quads in gaming.

My own benchmarks back that up. Just because you didn't have the exact same experience doesn't make it law.

Admittedly, the above article seems to suggest that there is a benefit to a quad in the 'Fixed' benchmark, but never touches on the meaning of this as it relates to the 'Variable' benchmark.

It does not strike me as inconceivable that in a gaming scenario where the exact sequence of events is pre-determined, more threads could be effectively put to use than could be in a dynamic (variable) gaming scenario ... given that thread concurrency issues are the primary obstacle to multi-core development in games in general. At least, that's how I understand it.

BTW, what part of the phrase "Based on my own testing it does not appear that ..." equates to "my observations are law"?

I'm really just keen to see someone provide some evidence that in the VARIABLE (i.e. gameplay) benchmark, there is a tangible advantage to a quad vs. a dualie.

Since you have done your own benchies, it'd seems like it'd be simple for you to provide them in order to corraborate, or disprove, my observations.

In the interest of scientific study

I got my new card now .

Since AA seems to do absolutely nothing I ran it on max settings DX10 no AA and got this:

Very,Very happy with me new card ....Nvidia seems to run smoother in games but i will always love ATi too

Where do you go to restrict the cores that can be used?

This would be nice for some Q9650 vs E8400 benches with my friend.

I bet the E8400 and the Q9650 are EXACTLY the same with 2 cores each.

I think you have to do it in bios. You can disable/enable cores there.
