I think I reseated my cooler over 20 times trying to get the best temps. I've notice with this freaking thick ass glop, you really, really need to make a tiny x in the dead center of the cpu. This size of the x should be roughly X large, obviously it'll be a little thicker and note that it doesn't have to be a perfect x. Be sure to squiggle it around some. This completely covers a standard copper base.
As for HDT coolers, the best temps I can get is by filling in the nooks and crannies using a credit card (barnes and noble card in my case). Then apply thin lines across all pipes. Roughly | long. Finally, apply a half a BB in the dead center of the cpu. Put on the cooler precisely over the cpu without moving it at all! It helps to have your motherboard out while doing this, that way you can make sure it's perfectly aligned. Overall, very informative guide.
