OK, she was, in fact, beatable. Key is to draw her alone into another room. Then when she hones in on one character, just have that character do laps around the room while Ser Cauthrien chases them. All the while your other 3 party members are picking at her.

Not the most dignified strategy but I beat her without losing any party members. That said, it then negates the whole prison part which is sort of a neat little side quest.

I'm finding it difficult to win battles when there's a mage in the opposing party. I've just started and I'm doing the first huge battle with Darkspawn where I have to get to the top of the tower. Whenever I run into a Hurlock Apprentice (or whatever they're names are), they throw a huge fireball into my party, scattering them, and taking out half their HP. Any tips for countering/fighting these guys? I've tried using the archer and mage to disable them while my two fighters bum rush, but that doesn't work all too well. I'm an elf mage character, BTW. Thanks.

haha, pretty much. Why do you ask? Is it that obvious?

So far I've pulled off that 'run around the room like a scared girl' strategy on Cauthrien and Loghain. Hell, whatever works, right? I wasn't beating them any other way.

I should be better on my next playthrough.

What worked best for me in those situations is try to separate the mob. Like hold your force back and have one guy draw them back to you. If you rush a tough group of enemies, you tend to get your ass handed to you more often than not if you don't have a strong strategy or on the spot attacks.

I don't think I have fought more than 8-10 minutes at a time between cut scenes. I love the graphics, love the story, need a way to shorten the cut scenes and add some subtitles.

One last fun point, on my laptop I had it on the lowest settings graphically and it was stuttering like crazy. Checked and everything is good(I have played other mean games on it before, it has an 8600M GT in it)...until I check gpuz, noticed the clocks are stuck in 2d mode which is sad. So I ran the game graphics up to max settings and the clocks kicked up to max and it runs great and looks great
Yes I thought the game was super slow, but I have now realized it's only the first part of the game that's slow, once you get past that, the fighting picks up, and it's a lot more fun. This is a very fun game!

There are definately parts when you have to do that. Especially if youre playing on hard or impossible(i know its nightmare).

Also, kill the mage first? Usually what I do. Theyre frustrating. Getting fireballed is super lame.

....

The cherry on the top is Ser Cauthrien. No helm, a big sword and chainmail armor just obliterates my party. I understand when fighting a Dragon or Gollem... but not some captain of the guards woman. Ugh. I bet if you pitted Ser Cauthrien against Flemeth, one on one, Ser Cauthrien would win. No magic, no nothing... she would beat a Dragon with strength alone. Flat out silly.
She is beatable. I had Allistair, Leliana, Morrigan and myself in the party. I baited her and a few archers to the library entrance in the back, took down the archers and then had her concentrate or myself (dual wielder with high dex) or allistair. I used some poisons for kicks (just 1 point in the skill and you can use any of the poisons)

Cone of Cold, Riposte(dual wield ability with stun), mind blast and the wards for paralysis really help. The key is to keep her immobille and on your tank. I was around level 17 to 18 at the time with high constitution on Allistair and myself around 350+ hp. She had to hit us about five times but her special abiliities could take down as much as 33% health in one hit if a critical hit scores.

I used about 3 to 4 potions on the tank before she died, and also coupled with a few healing spells from Morrigan.

Cone of cold is your best friends, since after that I always get her from behind for flanking damage. Preety much the same strat as any boss. MY HARD boss to kill was the brood mother. I didnt have any healing potions which SUCKED, so i couldnt take her straight on. I had to get behind her on the little islands and rain thunderstorms and blizzards on her + bows and xbows on everyone... Took SOOOOO long but with nature salves for the acid spit, it was nothin.

Spread out your party a bit after you meed them. If you can ambush his minions (pull in a few at a time) then if you have spirit prison, cast it on them ASAP. it imobilizes them for at least 1 to 2 minutes i think, while you cross the distance or take down his minions. If you dont have that spell yet (most likely since you just started) use cone of cold, winter blast or the ward to paralyze ASAP as soon as you get within range. Other than that, id say just tough through the fireballs if you dont have warm salves to minimize the damage.
