Little wary of the new patch. Think I'll hold off for a bit.

Just back up your files. I'll probably do it this weekend if I have time.

Has anyone else installed the patch besides the user above?

Sorry for not getting back to you lot but I've been busy with ... dragon age origins . This is what happened

  1. When the patch was released, I installed it normally and I found the issues above. In addition, all my DLC's were disabled.
  2. I uninstalled the game and re-installed the whole thing, same result
  3. I decided to try a new approach : install Origins, install patch 1.04, then Awakening. No joy because Awakening installs patch 1.03 by default!!!
  4. So after I tried installing and re-installing 7 times, I gave up because I was having the same errors.
  5. I played ME2 for a while and I end up with a crash in windows. After the pop up window that was saying, windows 7 is checking for a solution to this problem, I get a gpu recovery error from my Cat 10.6 and then my desktop dies. Black screen, could not do anything. No safemode, no nothing. Luckily, I have most of my data isolated from my OS so I formatted.
  6. I can confirm that after a full format, the Dragon Age Origins patch is working perfectly, I've no issues, no crashes, and no character creator problems.

I do not know why I had this problem, I am hoping this is an isolated case and that you guys will have no issue installing it.

Yikes.

Sounds isolated, but to be safe I'm going to image my OS since I need to anyway.

New DLC announced.

Quote:
Golems of Amgarrak

Delve deep underground to save a missing dwarven expedition in search of ancient secrets for creating monstrous constructs. Only you can uncover the gruesome fate that befell them.

Put your Warden back in action and adventure through new environments, meet new characters and defeat never before seen creatures. With an engrossing new storyline and challenging puzzles this is one add-on you don't want to miss!

* Import your character from Origins or Awakening or create a new, high-level hero!
* Face an all-new terrifying creature
* Earn powerful rewards that transfer into your Awakening and Origins campaign
* An advanced challenge for even the most experienced adventurers
I was thinking about playing through this again because I want to try a complete solo run. I've never done a warrior very far so I may try that at first. Anyway, looks like I decided just in time to try some new content.

Finally got around to playing Leliana's Song. It was sort of disappointing. I was expecting more backstory and more area to explore. You get a recycled Denerim map and what looks like a map recycled from Awakenings. Not much more than that. Purely linear. Plus I thought we would get to see Orleis. After a bunch of playthroughs with DA:O, Denerim isn't something I wanted to play AGAIN in a DLC.

Just thought it would be better I guess.

I just beat my first playthrough on DA:O. Here's what I have to say about it:

The Bad

1. It is a long game, like NWN long. If an NPC says they have a simple task for you, be prepared to spend several hours completing it. Nothing happens quickly, and there are no "simple" tasks. It gets repetitive at points because there is so much "filler" added in to stretch the play time out. This is most obvious in the dwarf city (where a simple act to support a particular candidate for the throne turns in to an 8 hour + quest chain spanning half the map), but it is actually common throughout the game.

2. The DLC isn't all that good. Buy it to show support to Bioware or to say you tried it if you want, but don't expect it to be worth the extra cost. You honestly won't be missing much if you skip it. The armor and companion DLC's both reward you with mediocre items/companions respectively, which can easily be substituted. The content DLC's like warden's keep and Leliana's Song do not add a whole lot to the gameplay experience...maybe a couple of hours and some minor lore/backstory.

Aside from the mediocre DLC, EA has the worst authentication system I have ever seen. If you run DLC, do yourself a favor and stay logged out as much as possible. If you log in, the authentication system checks your DLC to make sure it is legit. It does this every time you log in, and it is slow and glitchy as all hell. If it can't authenticate your DLC, you are locked out of your save game until it can. When I log in, it usually takes 3-5 attempts before the DLC will authorize.

3. The "hidden" alignment system wasn't all that impressive, because as far as I could tell, it didn't lead anywhere. I had one party member turn on me in a cutscene, which I fully expected that character to do at some point based on the character's history. I also had another leave close to the end of the game, but that one had 100% loyalty, so I'm pretty sure it was a "give me what I want or I'm out, no matter how much I like you" type event. Other NPCs didn't react particularly favorably or unfavorably towards my character, and all I got for being kind and helpful was some feel good text at the end of the game. I prefer the dialog system in Mass Effect for the simple reason that dialog choices in ME have a clear and immediate effect on the game.

4. You will wear out your space bar unless you have a godly team with perfect tactics settings. You will be pausing the game. A lot. On some of the more difficult battles, I would unpause long enough to swing my daggers, immediately pause again, check everyone and issue new orders if needed, then unpause again for long enough to take a single swing. It is far from fast-paced combat.

5. This game should have been called "Dragon Age: Betrayal". Never take an NPC at face value, because they all secretly hate you and want you to fail. It makes for an interesting story for a while, but by the fourth or fifth time someone stabs you in the back, it gets a little predictable. The good part about it is that you usually get the option to either forgive them or burn them for it.

SPOILER!!!
Telling Alistair to kill Loghain in front of Anora and then having her locked up was extremely rewarding. She'll think twice before double-crossing me again

The Good

1. Despite my complaints, I had fun playing through. The story was entertaining even though it slowed down at parts.

2. The party members you recruit love to talk, both to your character and to each other. Some of the dialog is touching, some of it is hilarious, and some of it is just weird. Be sure to talk to your party members frequently, both in camp and in the missions. The dialog in this game is some of the most entertaining I've ever seen.

SPOILER!!!
In particular, be sure to bring along Morrigan and Alistair in the same party, and Wynne and Oghren. Wynne and Alistair have some funny lines too, but it is more like mother and son type stuff.

3. The graphics look good without turning the game into a rig killer. I was able to run all settings on max on my sig rig. While the graphics aren't Crysis level realistic, they fit the game. Characters are expressive and varied, and buildings and ruins show a high level of attention to detail. You won't find cookie-cutter villagers and red-shirt soldiers in this game.

4. The finishing moves on bosses are great. I won't say more because I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen what I'm talking about yet.

Conclusion

Buy the game, and play it for at least 6-8 hours before you decide to can it. It starts off slow but it gets much better as the story progresses. Skip the DLC - you aren't missing anything. I played through as a dual-wield rogue damage dealer, with another rogue DD, a tank, and a healer mage in my party. It was challenging enough to keep me busy without being too difficult. Take some time to do some of the side quests. You might get good gear, experience, or allies from them. It is overall a pretty good game. Not the best RPG of all time as others have said, but far from the worst. It has aspects that remind me of both Oblivion and Neverwinter Nights, which were both good games as well.
