I've had this game for several months, but have never played it. Last night I decided to take a dive in and see what it was about.

My initial impression:

1. I like the character customization. I really like how many different ways the game can start. On the flip side of that, I spent a good 30 minutes trying to decide which character to make. I have read this game is incredibly in depth and deep, deep, deep.. and that it takes a LONG time to beat. This, I find annoying.. because I want to play through as every character lol.

2. Combat System - I'm disappointed. Having to constantly pause is killing my enthusiasm. I'm much more into rapid fire combat, especially if it involves some actual skill.. but the combat in DA:O is simply click and watch.

3. Graphics - The graphics are awesome. I love the way the game looks. And I especially love the special abilities and how they have unique and detailed animations of their own.

4. Storyline - It's a compelling storyline, which I fully expected with BioWare's history.

5. My biggest annoyance with the game though, combat system aside, is the lack of character dialogue. I'm so used to Mass Effect where you pick what you want to say and your character says it.. I hate not seeing my character ACTUALLY interact with the people.

Once I get home tonight I'm going to continue playing, either as the Elf Rogue or the Human Warrior I started, and see if I enjoy it more.

If anybody has any tips on how I can make the experience a little better, I'd appreciate it.

I might just have to go play some more ME2 though..

You can set the character tactics and let them run on their own if you would like, but for harder fights, this is going to prove difficult. The fights are complex, and require a lot of strategic management. Try to get the tactics down so that you only need to pause the game to consider kiting, health, etc.

The combat requires thought and planning, not reflexes. There isn't a single aspect of the game that is oriented towards quick, rewarding play.

Also, I think they left your character interaction out so much to let you live the role more. There is insane amounts of dialog depth and interaction with your party, you just don't see your character doing it.

The game also takes time to pick up. I'm not sure how far you are, but the beginning is very slow. Most of the depth is optional. There are tons of documents, books, etc that you can escape out of and ignore, greatly reducing the time to complete the game (and story depth).

I agree with _02.

I found that the more I played DA, the funner it got. I disliked the combat at first as well but as I got used to it and got better at it I found I really actually like it.

The story is super deep so replayability is awesome. The mods over at the Nexus/Bioware communities are awesome as well.

I tried to create my own character and it looks almost identical to the annoying blood Mage. It is so funny to see both of them in the cutscenes

Yes, the way how they create a beautiful storyline and make you want the next sequel so badly is just unmatched. I really enjoy their RPG's

Anyone going to pick up the Golems of Amgarrak DLC today? I've got spare Bioware points so I'll probably give it a try after work.
