I would be willing to pay a bit more, pay in advance and wait till one came in.

Are you thinking of Batch Number or Stepping Revision? They are two different things. For example, The difference between i7 920 C0 batch numbers will be minimal, because either way, a C0 will be difficult to bring to 4.0 GHz.

I don't see the point in paying more for a specific batch number, in the C0 or D0 series, because the performance margin between the C0's and the D0's itself will be enough. And for the D0's, you're not going to find a list of EVERY single batch number, it just doesn't exist. If you plan on buying online, I really doubt you'll get a specific batch number. Maybe if you go into a store, you could, but as long as it says SLBEJ on it, you're 4.0+ GHz bound.

EDIT: Oh crap, sorry. Didn't see this was in the TankGuys Section, i thought it was a general question.

Like any other CPU some batches give you higher clocks or equal clocks on lower voltage. I am not too concerned about the voltage as someone OCing on air would but I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for an extra 200Mhz and the peace of mind that I am getting one that isn't voltage hungry.

AFAIK, the difference between batches for the i7 920 D0's is very minimal. A list with every single batch isn't available publicly. but there is an A batch and a B batch, and the B batch has been proven to have better temperatures, and that's about it. I think your hardware (motherboard, RAM, cooling solution) would make more of a difference than the gain of 200mhz.

Yea, that is what I heard to. I guess it might not be worth it if it is a minimal difference, but it would be nice if Tank Guys could get you pay say, I dunno $5-10 or so to pick it. If it were $5 I'd be glad to, but it wouldn't be worth their time... unless they were trying to make satisfied customers even more satisfied.

When you are using Sub Zero and LN2 havign a good chip is a valid issue and paying for a good batch is an afterthought ... I too would like to know if we can have a specific number we are looking for possibly searched for... I would pay a premium for the service instead of trolling everywhere asking for numbers LOL

Not exactly, unfortunately. Intel and the distributors won't sell us specific batches either - we get luck of the draw. By pulling strings, I can usually get specific steppings (D0 vs C0 for example) but that's the extent of it. Beyond that, we tend to post what batch we have, so at least people know - but we don't have a way of getting specific ones, sadly.

That is not true, I had a C0 earlier this year and ran 4.2ghz 24/7 and I know plenty of people who get 4ghz with their C0's.


EDIT: I have also seen some D0's that wont reach 4ghz. Not every chip is created equal man. They are all different.

I'm not sure what you're saying is not true: the fact that it's difficult to bring a C0 to 4.0 GHz, or that the difference between batch numbers is equally as significant as the difference between stepping revisions.

I never said C0 to 4.0 GHz+ was impossible. it's difficult, not impossible. What were your temps at 4.x GHz on a C0? CPU heat itself can be a barrier to oc'ing for many people... Why did you change to a D0? Which would you say is easier to get to 4.0 GHz, with the best temps? a C0 or a D0?

how many C0's did you have? more than 2 i suppose? You probably had only 1 920 C0. that means you only had 1 920 C0 batch. If you had 2 or 3 or 4 to compare the difference in oc'ing abaility between the batches, and had proof that Batch X is better than Batch Y or Batch Z, then i stand corrected.

Well my C0 I had was a real gem. I don't exactly remember the voltage but it took more than my D0. I sold my first i7 setup because there were more important things that the money could go towards and I wasn't using it to its worth because I was busy so it was the first to go D0 is better but not by much, my C0 though no matter what wouldn't reach anything past 4.2ghz. That was its max it wouldn't budge from there.

Yes I understand I just say the C0's wont get 4ghz part of your post and had to say something sorry lol. I completely understand what you are saying now and I agree.
