itunes not adding all songs in my library?

I've been going through cleaning up my music library and noticed something weird. I have 1605 songs in my Music folder. When I "add folder" to my itunes library, it only adds 1603 songs. I can delete the entire itunes library and start from 0 songs, but it still only gets up to 1603.

I really don't want to sift through that many songs to find the missing 2. I checked, and all the songs are MP3's, so theres no odd formats that itunes isn't seeing or anything like that. Any idea what's going on?

***.... deleted, redownloaded and reinstalled. on first boot, it still had all my library (1603). So i "add folder" out of curiosity, and now I have 1608 songs in itunes... from a library of 1605.

I assume its keeping track of my library in that hidden folder roamingappdata or something. anyone know how to completely delete itunes and my library so i can do a truely fresh install?

hmm. Idon't know what to tell you.... Tried using a different media player? Is it possible that there are only 1603 songs in that folder and the other aren't from misselaneous folders of the desktop or something?

I really want to stop using itunes, but i have an ipod touch, and i havent found a good way to sync it with any other programs.

and there's definitely 1605 files in My Music. I sorted the files by type and the first is MP3 and the last is MP3, so there's no weird formats hiding anywhere. also no folders, links, anything like that.

I even deleted all the appdata folders that had to do with itunes and deleted the itunes folder that it makes in your music library (just to be clear, I dont have my music in the My Music folder that windows makes, I have it all on a seperate hard drive)

after all that and new fresh install, still only 1603 in my itunes after "add folder"... thanks anyways for the help, ill try to figure it out later

I can't wait for the zune hd to come out so i can be rid of anything apple

Hi there,

I've been aware of this issue for a while now. I've got about 80Gb of music than I'm adding incrementally to itunes, whilst fixing bad tags, missing artwork etc.

To debug this problem, just now I'm adding 90 folders at a time from my artists folder, containing MP3s, M4As, M4Vs, M4Bs, WAVs, and more (but ignoring FLACs and skipping WMAs).

Tracking the totals (in itunes vs on the hard drive) in Excel I've noticed something STRANGE! After the first import (22-20s - De La Soul), I was 1 track short, so I started again by moving these 90 folders into a holding folder, then adding by file type (search in windows for MP3s in the temp folder, select all, drag and drop into a playlist. repeat for each file type) and found this worked, all 3212 mp3s,m4as,m4vs,m4bs,and wavs were added.

The second run went ok, all 1911 expected songs were imported. Likewise with the third run and fourth runs, all 3500 songs were added from 180 folders, from Gwen Stefani (ahem) to OMD. Yes, I have some dubious music.

On the last run, adding everything from Orbital to Status Quo, 2448 of the expected 2458 songs were added. Out of curiosity, I Created a new library, and added just these songs. Only 2447 songs were added!
I emptied the library and added using the "search by file type and import" technique, and the library has 2458 songs, as expected. Weird.

To me, this suggests the issue isn't bad/protected songs (I use itunes library updater for synching, removing orphaned entries, updating tag info etc, and in the past this has highlighted which songs weren't added, mp3 Validator indicated this was due to LOTS of missing frames?) because these songs cannot be added to iTunes regardless of the import technique you adopt. They're either skipped (if they're "bad") or authorisation is requested (if they're protected). This also has nothing to do with incompatible files (only supported file types, specifically MP3 and the various M4s mentioned above are being used. And wavs). Is Windows being an idiot?

I've edited the above as sadly I've found protected music can be imported, and you don't know it's protected until you try and access it (I use lots of laptops so authorisation is constantly expiring, which is a pain as some of my library is from friends ) ANY IDEAS HOW TO EASILY IDENTIFY WHICH MUSIC IS PROTECTED?)

Any info most appreciated!

UPDATE: Re the above, a quick search of *.mp3,*.m4a,*.m4p,*.m4b,*.m4v,*.wav whilst ignoring hidden files returned 2447 files. This suggests iTunes will not add hidden files!

To fix, try selecting your music folder's properties (right click it in Explorer), and tick hidden, stating you only want to hide that folder (not it's contents).

Straight after hiding it, unselect hidden and apply to all sub-folders and files. Takes a couple of minutes, and assumes you don't mind having all files visible (why wouldn't you?!) but iTunes should then have as many songs as you "own".

Back to the WMA duplicates/missing tag saga!

One last update, in case anyone has any ideas. I've just re-added the iTunes Music folder to the library, and for some reason, it's only adding 713 of 714 M4A files. The other file isn't hidden! Checked that the largest and smallest files are present, wondered if anyone had any ideas before I try and work it out the hard way!?

Another cause may be a dodgy file. I tried re-importing all iTunes music and was one file short. To try and identify, I tried copying A-M (half the alphabet) of the M4A files to a temp location for importing. but got a CRC data error.

This explains why iTunes was one song short!

Thanks

Jonny
