Lag Spikes and Wireless Zero Config for Windows 7?

I recently moved my computer into my bedroom and now I'm relying on a USB Wireless Adapter which is the Netgear WN121T. I'm having some problems... especially while playing games though.

While playing in pretty much any online game, I maintain an acceptable ping, but the ping spikes every so often (every minute or so) to 200+ which causes the game to be unplayable. Sometimes I don't' have this problem, but for the majority of the time (85%) I keep getting these lag spikes.

I did some googling and saw a possible explanation which claimed that Windows Zero Configuration causes the connection to drop every so often as the connection is being re-evaluated and by turning off this service, the spikes would go away. I'm running Windows 7 though, and from what I understand this service no longer exists... so what is causing my problem?

My usb wireless adapter is 2 rooms away and is a mere 12 feet. I can't easily route an ethernet cable through since there are two walls in between so wireless is pretty much my only easy option.

Will I see an improvement if I grab a PCI wireless card? Is there a wireless NIC buying guide?

Thanks.

I have Windows 7, can I use WLAN Optimizer?
- Maybe. Windows 7 makes use of the Native Wifi API, so the tool should do its job. However, it's questionalbe if WLAN Optimizer is neccessary under Windows 7: I tried Windows 7 on two systems and didn't experience any lag on both of them with Windows 7 RC (with Vista there was lag on the same hardware).

I have the same problem in Windows 7. Every 5-10 minutes my ping shoots up from 30ms to 1000ms+. This high ping lasts about 20-30 seconds, so every 5-10 minutes my game freezes out for 20-30 secs and I usually come out of it dead.

I tried the recommended WLAN Optimizer but it did not help. I am getting really frustrated with it, everyone with windows 7 seems to have the same problem. I have 2 pc's both using different wireless cards and they both get the same problem and WLAN Optimizer doesnt do anything to help (it makes it worse if anything).

Anyone know how to fix this? I would be really grateful.

I know I'm necro-ing an old thread here but I had to post to tell everyone that the "WLAN Optimizer" linked in this thread FIXED MY ISSUE for the most part!!! I'm so happy! Thank you so much, Dudeson169.

I was using WEP wireless security protocol. I changed it to WPA2 in the router settings and it fixed my problem with the lag spikes. (Wlan and other similar programs didn't solved the problem for me).
