Thread Starter

This is a screenshot of my temps and voltages after running Prime95 overnight:

i feel like i should be able to get a much higher OC, but i don't like having my temps even that high...

i am currently OCed at 160x22 on my I7 940 (3.67ghz) and would like to push past 3.8 for daily use...

any tips? (this is the first comp i have ever OCed)

u should try to run it on a lower Vcore ( im running i7 920, 4ghz @ 1,184V in cpu-z and 1,2V in bios, what revision is your chip ? check it in CPU-Z. u can get it here in case u dont have it already:

Your CPU Vcore seems high at 1.35v for an overclock of 3.67Ghz. With 1.35v you generate a lot of heat so if you can get it lower you will have more head room to overclock.
Try lowering you Vcore and raising your CPUvtt to get stable.

Those max temps are quite high...

how much should i raise the CPUvtt? Any time i tried to lower the Vcore i got really unstable (5-10 min in prime95)

also, because i am learning all this as i go, what is CPUvtt?

VTT is the termination voltage. IIRC, it's the voltage required to transfer data between CPU and memory (cache I guess).

All I know for sure is that a high VTT can cause increased signal noise and make an overclock unstable, so finding a balance is key.

Plus c1 revision core i7s are known to run hot and not oc as well as d0 revision i7s

My C0/C1 920 made it to 3.88 on 1.30

The 940 should most likely be a higher binned chip, so you have a better chance at an overclock.

Take that voltage down quite a bit. Your temps are way to high.

i will try to up my vtt when i get home to see if i can get my vcore lower

any ballpark ideas about how much i should raise the vtt?

thanks for the tips
well, imo u have set ur memory voltage wrong or your motherboard did, and its causiing u instability at lower Vcore. i checked your ram @ ocz website and its rated for 1,65V and your running it @ 1,5V. adjust it to 1,65 in bios and try to lower your Vcore after that.
