Pros and cons of Hyperthreading

Thread Starter
hi guys iam just experimenting with my OC and after disabling Ht on 4.0 iam able to reach temps under load of 53 max

can some1 tell me if any games(and only games)use this technology

also can some1 give me a list of APPS that uses this tech?

also can some1 tell me the actual pros and cons of this tech?

If you are doing anything that can take advantage of many cores, such as video encoding, you will benefit.

Games will not likely run any better.

Hyperthreading helps with applications that can take advantage of more than 4 threads. It hurts with applications that can't in most cases, and makes your chip run about 10C hotter. I leave it on but I don't need that extra 400 points in 3DMark. If your temps w/o HT are 53C I would just leave it on. It is up to you though, it really doesn't matter too much right now since there are so few apps that can take advantage of 8 threads.

Turn it off. It does nothing for gaming.

Games usually take advantage of up to 3 cores(threads). I keep it off since I don't really use anything that would load up over 4 threads. I would prefer if a program would just use a separate core when it is available rather than loading up the same core. It would prove to be an advantage with video/music encoding and heavy multitasking.

It is better turned "off". When stuff needs 4 cores and even more, HT will need to be enabled.

Fallout 3 and Oblvion may see some minor benefit if you edit the ini file and jack up the number of threads Havok can use.

I get no frame rate dip during multiple huge explosions with 8 Havok threads going. I would lose 10-15 fps before adjusting the ini file.

Other than that, not much of any games are going to benefit from more than 2-4 threads.

I would say run your pc with hyperthreading on for the entire week then the next week you switch it off and see if u notice any difference. You most probably wont feel any difference so u just turn it off.

Do the above and you can also run CPU benchmarks and compare maybe?
