No. This does not use Crossfire or SLI. It intercepts the calls before the cards.

You can pair any recent NVIDIA cards in "Hydra" mode.
You can pair any recent ATI cards in "Hydra" mode.

Speaking of which.... what are they calling their tech exactly? Is there a "Hydra mode" term?

Yes, but for non bandwidth-limited systems, does this offer anything more than crossfire does? I guess we'll have to see if it scales well.

If rumors about the next driver release are true, Nvidia already has plans to cripple it in terms of being able to use ATI and Nvidia cards simultaneously.

The only testing I've seen shows benefit of the Hydra only when using more than 2 cards (the scaling does not drop off), but when using 2 cards it is better to go the traditional route.

Lucid never said that they will support using ATI and Nvidia cards simultaneously. I believe they had said it could work in theory but they would not devote the large amount of work to do it.

Do you think this will work with SLI GTX 295's or crossfire 4870 x2's? There would be two types of linking going on.

With traditional x2 cards, 2 sets of data is already being sent to the card, so in theory it shouldn't be any different

I'd rather hold off on this and get an x68 board with Core i9. Or an AM3 890FX/SB850. Current chipsets are rather disappointing to me.

Yes, it should work. The Hydra chip sends different instructions to each set of cards.

With Crossfire or SLI, the same instructions and data are being sent to both cards. The workload must be divided by some pattern.... half-screen, alternating frame, checkerbox, stripes, etc.

The Hydra takes the instructions and breaks them apart. It then sends work to the cards depending on ability. The workload is now divided by object. GPU1 is a GTX285 so it will get the "render sky" instructions while GPU2 is a 8600GT so it gets the "render brick wall" instruction.

Something VERY exciting to add to all of this, is the fact that you wont HAVE to buy a compatible motherboard. They are trying to offer a add-on card with the Hydra chip on it!

That's amazing1
