One thing I have noticed is that there is a lot less customisation. While I like what you can do to your Oynx Armour in the game it would be nice if you could customise the Inferno Armour. Also same with your team mates, in ME1 you could give them armour and why can't Jacob use AR's? It clear from his background that he would of been using them while in the Alliance.

I agree, but then again they decided to go RPG-lite... IIRC you had to "prep" him during the encounter on Virmire to open up that option.
It would have been interesting if you could have found and possibly collected for study and/or recruitment a single unaltered Prothean. It is plausible that the Reapers would have kept a few natural specimens in a state of quasi cryopreservation as a control/genetic backup. A Prothean companion/crew member in the 3rd installment would be neat.

Definitely a good game - arguably different in terms of gameplay/mechanics but was it an improvement over the first?

-Combat-

-Pros-

*Overall a better shooter in execution.
*Cover mechanic is a vast improvement.
*Vanguard's charge ability adds a new dimension/entirely different approach to combat.
*Infiltrator's cloaking ability coupled with sniping was also quite enjoyable.
*In ME1 x-mods made the original feel too easy/cheap. It was nearly possible to strap 2 heatsinks to a assault rifle and simply tape the left mouse button down. The thermal clips helped address this issue however, conceptually, there are some flaws.

-Cons-

*No jumping or crouching capabilities.
*Vanguard's charge can, at times, allow one to fly through static objects. While at other times declare there's a line of sight issue that just isn't there...
*Thermal clips complaint 1* A big issue here as they function more like ammo. If you have a weapon that will entirely consume a thermal clip after say 50 shots and you have 5 thermal clips that equates to 250 possible shots. However, from a mechanics perspective reloading a new thermal clip when one has 15 shots left should not leave you with 215 shots in your "ammo reserve". You should have only 200, aka 4 unused thermal clips left.
*Thermal clips complaint 2* The geth and Collectors have significantly different tech, why would they need/use the same thermal clips? This complaint also goes to "heavy ammo" - why is all heavy ammo interchangeable when the heavy weapons, per their descriptions, fire different projectiles??? It may seem like nitpicking but(IMHO) scifi is all about plausibility and pushing related boundaries. The whole thermal clip/heavy weapon ammo issue kills immersion(for me at least). The mechanics have been simplified and coalesced into such a basic/interchangeable format their believability is beyond fiction. In fact the purpose of such a system is to make it easier, either for the player or from a development perspective(perhaps even a little of both).
*By limiting power usage to only one given power per action/round adepts are not nearly as effective as say Soldiers, Infiltrators or Vanguards.

-Mini-games-

*Across the board they were arguably worse or at best no more enjoyable than the first.
*Hacking*Trivial and repetitive. It quickly became a boring chore done only for the credits. Almost as bad as Oblivion's "lock picking".
*Scanning planets for resources* Holy crap this was bad. Fortunately you only have to scan enough to afford researching various upgrades. Unfortunately that much scanning is still incredibly tedious.

1)Single, easily solvable, solution games become repetitive fast. ME2's match the shapes is guilty of this beyond any doubt. It would have been better to come up with a truly dynamic game system(think chess, checkers, scrabble ect) which doesn't have to be completely original or mindbogglingly difficult. But abandoning a highly repetitive(simple, static, single solution) hacking/lockpicking mini-game is preferable to keeping it. Minig-games should not be a chore/job with the only impetus being some kind of in game monetary or material reward. Variability, complexity and increased challenge as game progresses(ME2's hacking got easier most likely as a response by devs to it's immutable monotony) is definitely a difficult proposition... But I think it's possible.

*Possible solution to hacking* I think a scalable pseudo-holographic jenga (and for the sake of variety possibly a simon) inspired mini-game could have been fun.

2)Scanning the planets. Again repetitive and unrewarding to the point of absolute tedium. You have a freaking AI! Why can't it scan?!? It should become automatic, at least once you've bought the upgraded scanner anyway...

*Rambling thought*

To name a few - Omega, Illium and Tuchanka(SP?) had great(and varying) atmospheres; it's a shame there wasn't more to them to just explore...

As for story/plot, area design, music/sound, ambiance and character development (ect) that would take another giant wall of text... But generally those were constructed and executed quite well. Again a good game, I guess I get a little fixated on the issues that detract and begin to speculate as to what could have been done differently to make it more enjoyable(well from perspective anyway).

I just finished it yesterday, with just under 40 hours played. I did all but 1 side quest, and another part of another quest. I had Garrus and Zaeed in my squad for the most part. I'm going to play through again with Thane and Tali in my squad. Can anyone tell me how the character creation works if you don't import? I don't really want to go through ME1 again just to transfer a profile.

I'm going to agree with most of this assessment. Long story short, I liked the first one quite a bit more, but ME2 was still worth my money.

Very similar to the one in ME1,
1- ask if you want to be male/female.
2- Ask for standart or custom appearance
3- Ask for your past (where you've born and what happened on Thorfan)
4- Ask for the Class.

I may not 100% right on the order but it's like ME1.

I finished my first play through. The ending was sick!! I think Im going to start a new ME1 save and play all the way through at one time plus pick up and DLC from ME 1 that I missed.

ME3 is going to one heck of a ride if the ending scene is any indication. My jaw dropped when it ended....

The second Redemption comic is out, picked up my copy today.

Also, does anyone have unused Inferno armor/Incisor rifle codes? I'm willing to pay a small amount of money for them.

I got the digital deluxe edition and just realised after completing the game that I've not seen the collector armour or incisor rifle, do I need to enter the key in somewhere to unlock it or am I missing something obvious? :S

and is there any more news on the M57 hammerhead? cant wait to see what its like.
