I could do it with the 'CNC' sander we made at school. It's jokes, we got a belt sander, mounted it on a board then set up a tray with some rails and bearings to slowly move forward. It isn't really CNC, since you don't program anything, you just move the depth stop to the distance you want, when a tag on the tray hits the stop, the power to the motor is killed. It's great for sanding down masses of material and getting it perfectly straight.

the bits with the pilot bearing are nice

that's the purpose of a pilot bearing; it would contact the bonded panel and the flush cut bit then shaves off the overlap of the panel to be even with the bonded panel.

A router table is not always the best choice as the panel with the router is often a bit below the level of the rest of the table; a router with a properly adjusted but with pilot bearing does an excellent job.

Too advanced for me.

But since I trust your judgement and experience, and seeing as I have a tendency to be tenacious I am inclined to try the technique again.

I know that bearing tipped bits work well for the application we are discussing here- that's what I just said!

Should it not also be implied that the router/table be properly setup if one says that a quality router/table is necessary or strongly preferred?

The point that I was trying to make was that it can be done, but that Syrillian would likely need to buy a new router(and replace his table unless he wanted to do the routing free-hand).

Also, routing of excess acrylic presents the additional torture of sanding and polishing edge(s) after the joint has been made. As anyone who has worked with acrylic knows, it is far easier to sand and polish an edge before welding pieces together.

A 5 axis mill works much better than a router.... Too bad they are a million bucks for a decent one, versus a couple hundred bucks for a good router.
