Counter-Strike: Source - Guide - How to get knife kills

Thread Starter
Feel free to submit your own tips guys and I'll add the best ones!

Tips for getting a knife kills (intermediate):

1. Don't just stand around or hide in one spot with your knife out. This is a gunfight. You may get occasional single knife kills this way but you will die a lot. Very boring.

2. Be sure you are using a mouse with shortcut buttons and have one button mapped to the knife (ideally you should have grenades on a mouse shortcut too, and your middle click should be "last weapon used" for quick pistol slinging or knifing)

3. Weaken your enemies with shots before knifing. One nade isn't usually enough for you to get a kill in one stab

4. ALWAYS use the right mouse button to knife. It does more dmg.

5. Practice in a gungame server and observe the tactics used by other players. Gungame maps are usually compact and intense and are great for some warmup knife kills. It will allow you to quickly see what works and what doesn't. (gungame is great in general for intermediate players, or for a warmup for experienced ones)

6. In very close quarters combat, pulling out the knife can be faster and more deadly than pulling out the pistol. You also get a speed bonus to running. You have been warned!

7. Sometimes you pull out the knife and the enemy runs, hides, or otherwise evades your efforts. It's ok to put away the knife and go to pistol or main, then back to knife later. (that's where your mouse shortcuts come back in handy)

8. As in other aspects of CS:S, sound is very important. Be aware of where your prey lurks and don't be afraid to walk during periods where you you could easily be discovered audibly. The best players in CS:S use sound as much as sight, and you will be killed by them if you are stomping around the map swinging your knife around.

Tips for being a "Knifer Extraordinaire" (1337):

1. Always have smokes and flashes ready. Smoke tight areas, doglegs, double sets of double doors, etc. and have your friends smoke the same area when enemies are near. Mass confusion is your friend - spray w/ smg or nade, and pull out the knife to finish them off (got 3 knife kills in a row this way - B side paranesi on a pro server).

2. Continually push hard at the weakest flank of the enemy - the best flankers can be the best knifers. If you can push through the flank, you will end up behind their other rushed flank. BUT once you push through, take your time. You want your enemy to take some damage before you close in for the knife. Any time you're behind an enemy your chances of getting a successful knife kill multiply. Again, a couple of flashes wouldn't hurt.

3. Weak points are the back and (possibly) the head. Easy to say, hard to do.

4. Target one weak enemy player with your penetrating blade by learning his patterns. This will have a psychological effect on him and his team at large if you knife this guy twice or more. He'll likely complain to his team mates if they haven't yet noticed on their own. You get a bonus to the terror effect if you call him out in advance. The psychological effects of your knife threat could cause the enemy to make erratic or bad decisions that result in their death - one way or another.

5. Definitely use height to your advantage. Dropping out of windows, stacks of boxes, and other high places can often work better than simply hiding behind a box or in a cloud of smoke. Probably half of CS players keep their crosshiars roughly on the same vertical plane, giving potential knifers a chance to work with altitude to their advantage. This is also a useful flanking tactic on maps like de_cbble and de_paranesi that have a lot of vertical options.

This is good stuff - it also applies to BF2 to a certain extent (where you have to get knife kills to progress the medals)

i don't necessarily agree with the mouse buttons being mapped... i'm a bhopper and i have to have my mwheeldown to jump

if you're leet you should be able to hit 1, 2, and 3 quick enough to swap around your weapons, and keep your mwheel for hopping!

my name is buttmud and i hop

Aim for the head? This is a CS source guide, that will not help you. What will help is aiming for the back, which is a one hit kill.

Also left clicking has more range and recharges very fast. If the person is almost in range and you're behind them, you want to left click once you are close enough. That will slow them down enough that they will be in range for a right click.

Wrong. You run just as fast as having a pistol/he grenade/smoke/flash out. But running with a primary is slower..

Yeah, it's sounding like he's thinking about 1.6 with the comment about the head knifing too. In 1.6 the knife was faster then pistols.

yea dont aim for the head smaller hitbox, also only 1hit kill is the back with a knife, all others do 67 dmg right click. Also there is no point period to do a left click knife, it does 10 dmg and is pointless, you left click knife me im just gonna shoot you then laugh
