I have a TomTom One I believe. It's pretty good for finding places. I heard Garmin has better maps and will probably find better routes.

You should look into the TomTom One 130 and Garmin Nuvi 250/260. Find what features you want and don't want.

I am a garmin fan, and for good reasons. Garmin has better maps but you have to pay for updates. A lifetime update is around $120 and you get unlimited updates. Other companies may give you free updates but Garmin has the best maps by far.

I own a Garmin Nuvi 255WT (T adds traffic updates). I love it. Does everything I need it to. Used it on a trip recently for a couple weeks across Oregon. I would highly recommend the Nuvi series.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PLOTWS Refurb but well worth the money.

Honestly, you'll want to find one of the omnitech units that Staples sold. You can hack these units to use Tomtom, Garmin, or any other maps you wish. If you want one that you don't have to do any work on, the Garmin 205w is about in the price range though I would save up a bit more and get the 265wt because it has traffic for free. The omnitechs should be less than $50 shipped.

+1 to the Garmin. Traffic updates are extremely helpful, and you can get what speed you are supposed to be going if no signs are posted(pretty much my favorite feature). Plus if you wait until around Christmas the update packages can get really cheap, you can nab them for like half off. And GPS's go for extremely cheap on black Friday.

The 265 series also has bluetooth for hands-free calling from your cell phone. The problem is that it isn't really compatible with all phones and isn't as ironed out yet as it probably should be. The 255 series is the exact same minus the bluetooth.

The traffic updates are very nice but only cover major highways and such. But it is very nice when you travel on those roads. We were going through Portland, I-5 south was bad and it rerouted us and saved us at least half an hour of waiting in traffic. If you need the feature, it is very nice to have.

I almost forgot about the speed limits. It tells you the speed limit on the road you are on. A wonderful features, thanks for mentioning that.
