comparing what?
I would say for futureproofing, X2 series. The opterons are decent CPU's, but for futureproofing, X2 dual core is the way to go. But, if you like OCing, no better CPU for your buget than an opteron (just make shure u know the stepping)

Best future proof, X2. Best performance, fx-57(not sure on prices, but you might be able to find a deal somewhere) or the 3700-4000+. Those are the ones that'll keep going on into the next gen socket, the M2.

Very nice find there, here is the best X2 its 2.4ghz only 200mhz less then the opteron but 2x1mb L2 cache instead of 1mb.

Or here is the 2.2ghz version for cheaper:

The Athlon 4800+ X2 can easily reach 2.6ghz on stock with all decent components. If you pair this beastley CPU with some nice ram and a good motherboard and power supply you could reach much greater, maybe with some good cooling even 2.8-3.0ghz. If you are lookin for a dual core chip for the future and have the money to spend I would say get this one, but there are cheaper alternatives.
